I Can No Longer Accept Being Condescended To By The Little Game On My Phone

I got got by Connections this week. This is a rare occurrence, because I have a big strong brain that can make distinctions that other brains often cannot. So when I lose Connections, I feel great shame. I have disgraced not only my own legacy, but that of my family's as well. I did not live up to my standard playing Connections, and that will haunt me for a good long time, maybe even into lunch today.

So what the fuck are you, The New York Times games app, to tell me this shit?

PICTURED: A lie.

Muting is okay

Manu Moreale blogs that he’s tired of all the crap: The problem is that there’s also an infinite amount of depressing and/or enraging shit out there on the web, and even though I’m not on any social media platform of any kind, I’m still exposed to that crap. And I’m tired o...

Baseball Is The Best

Another season of coaching my son's instructional baseball team is in the books. It had its share of ice packs and bloody lips, but the moment that stuck with me had less to do with baseball and more to do with how we teach kids to handle fear, failure, and fun.

“I think this is costing us more than we realize”: what permissionless ownership really asks of you

Conceptual textured illustration of a hand reaching toward a bright glowing sun against a blue background, symbolizing initiative and permissionless ownership.

Most people do not stay quiet because they have nothing to say. They stay quiet because speaking up changes their

Daveigh Chase has passed away. She was Lilo in Lilo & Stitch, Chihiro in Spirited Away, and also in Donnie Darko. Andreas Deja blogged about working with her:

Working on the character of Lilo was a profoundly moving experience for me as an animator. Daveigh’s voice performance was utterly unique and inspired, presenting a brand-new challenge and the perfect opportunity to bring an unorthodox Disney girl to life.

It’s hard to imagine how someone went from that experience — a movie that will be remembered for a hundred years — to such a low point of personal struggles, even homelessness.

Weekly Notes 25/2026

I am back from Chennai. It was fun meeting lots of students, hearing what they think, etc. This time I met some old-time friends, which was a bonus. Conducting the workshop was also fun. I hope to build on that workshop to demystify LLMs further and offer it again. In the last week,...

John Early’s Secret Is Total Commitment

John Early’s Secret Is Total Commitment
John Early has one of the most expressive faces of any actor working today. You've almost certainly seen it. The 38-year-old comedian, born and raised in Nashville, has had many small breaks into the zeitgeist over the past decade or so. His voice might also be familiar to y...

Whoopi Goldberg says the Knicks should visit the White House. "I want all those black men to stand in our house and remind all of those people — as we try to remind the vice president — that when you try to destroy one part of history, you're destroying all of our history." So true.

When did the Knicks turn the corner?

I've been trying to understand what the Knicks winning means to me. I'm reminded of the feeling when we sold my mother's house, the house I grew up in, the one my father had died in nine years earier. The site of every battle and come-from-behind victory (I graduated college...
