Enjoyed this post from Cory Doctorow: Refining humanity:

Computers don’t just clarify what we know and how we organize our society: they also clarify what we are.

Notus reporting:

Senior U.S. officials have held preliminary discussions with major artificial intelligence companies about the potential for the federal government to acquire some shares in their firms…

Sort of says something about the potential bipartisan response to AI that Trump, Bernie Sanders, and Sam Altman all generally agree that the public should own a piece of AI. Separately, I think there should be public AI just like there are public libraries. But maybe you do that and a system of dividends.

In prep for WWDC, reading up on some things I should’ve learned about Apple Foundation Models a year ago. I think I had dismissed it quickly because the on-device models are so small by frontier AI standards.

OJ and & Knicks

A close friend texted this me: The most recent time when the Knicks led in the NBA Finals was June 17, 1994 (they would lose the series), and this occurred on that same day. That was exactly 2 weeks before my I-Day. (Induction Day is when he was sworn into active duty...

The Knicks won again last night. They're now up 2-0, both games on the road. This has blown my sense of reality. This Knicks team bears no resemblance to what I think of as the Knicks. Hard to concentrate. Will Trump try to put his name of Madison Square Garden.

Netlify CTO Dana Lawson: Writing code is no longer the job

Code-as-abstract-art: lines of blue and white source code dissolve into streaking light trails and a glowing circuit-board pattern, evoking software being rendered into pure data.

“I’ve been doing this since the ’90s — decades of building guardrails to prevent humans from breaking production. We’re now

Iran and the Open Social Web

I can’t shake thinking that someone needs to build an app for phones, tablets, and laptops that is as easy to use as Signal, but under the hood uses a mix of #Reticulum, #DeltaChat, and an #OpenSocialWeb gateway.
It’s exactly what we need for this:

“Internet blackouts have become routine in Iran, imposed during anti-regime uprisings and now two wars. But this one—Iran’s fifth—was the world’s longest, according to Netblocks… some online connection is now restored, but for many Iranians, the partial reopening feels like the removal of a few bricks from the digital wall the Islamic Republic has built: Enough for Iranians to glimpse the outside world, but not enough for them to enter it, and the opening comes with the knowledge that the regime can brick the wall back up at any time.”
