By virtually every key metric, efforts to fight climate change are going too slowly, according to findings by a coalition of climate groups. In some cases, things are moving in the wrong direction.

1.5 Miles of Aluminum Foil Is, in Fact, No Big Whoop

daringfireball.net/linked/2025/10/20/london-phone-theft

Here’s an update I just posted to yesterday’s piece on organized phone theft rings in London:

I forgot to apply one of the core tenets of Brian Kernighan’s wonderful book Millions, Billions, Zillions ($19 in hardcover from Amazon; BookShop.org link to indie booksellers): always do some back-of-the-envelope double-checking of the math in news stories. 1.5 miles of aluminum (or even aluminium) foil from Costco is just 12 rolls at 200 meters each. I wouldn’t blink my eyes at someone with a dozen rolls of foil in the cart at Costco.

Beyond the Machine: Creative agency in the AI landscape via Frank Chimero

frankchimero.com/blog/2025/beyond-the-machine/

I am so tired of hearing about AI. Unfortunately, this is a talk about AI.

I’m trying to figure out how to use generative AI as a designer without feeling like shit. I am fascinated with what it can do, impressed and repulsed by what it makes, and distrustful of its owners. I am deeply ambivalent about it all. The believers demand devotion, the critics demand abstinence, and to see AI as just another technology is to be a heretic twice over.

Barely any time to work or blog the last couple of weeks because of family stuff that maybe I’ll write about later when I can get my head together. I’ve enjoyed shipping the movie and TV show features. They are a nice distraction. The video improvements are close… Need some space to ship them.

On Sunday,  the Louvre museum in Paris was burgled in broad daylight. Thieves in disguises entered through the windows and used a glass cutter to access thousands of precious diamonds and gems. The thieves are still at large. Across France, authorities and citizens alik...

Why the open social web matters now via Ben Werdmuller

werd.io/why-the-open-social-web-matters-now/

I was privileged to deliver the opening keynote at this month's FediForum, a conference for people building and supporting the open social web. My talk touched on what's happening now, drew on my experiences building Elgg and Known and investing at Matter Ventures, and gave participants three important questions to ask themselves as they build platforms and serve communities.

Mike McDaniel’s Really Bombing Up There

Mike McDaniel’s Really Bombing Up There

Of all the NFL teams currently residing in the dumpster, the Miami Dolphins might be the most pungent. The quarterback, the offense, the defense—it all reeks. When things go badly, the head coach's job is to sniff out what stinks and address it. Mike McDaniel is just kind of spraying it down with Febreze and hoping it goes away.

On Sunday, quarterback Tua Tagovailoa went 12-for-23 with 100 passing yards and three interceptions, achieving a career-low single-game passer rating of 24.1, as Miami got thumped 31-6 by the Cleveland Browns. The Browns! The only nice thing you could say about that Dolphins game is that the Raiders were worse. The Fins are now 1-6, with their only victory coming over the winless Jets.

Great blog post about why people like 37signals:

They write books, give talks, maintain strong Twitter presences, and share their opinions on everything from work culture to F1. I don’t always agree with their opinions. I might disagree with a good deal more than 50% of them. But I know where they stand, and I know why.

37signals has created a unique business over 20+ years, and I think this post explains why it will persist even as there is controversy from time to time, such as recent disappointment with DHH’s political posts.

A few initial thoughts on ChatGPT Atlas… Good name. I thought about naming a product Atlas recently. Dia still feels like a more complete design, but Atlas can be more tightly integrated with ChatGPT history. I don’t use Dia’s AI features mostly because it feels too separate from other tools.

An Interview With The Guy Anthony Edwards Called “Fly As Fuck” While Giving Timothee Chalamet The White Boy Of The Year Award

An Interview With The Guy Anthony Edwards Called “Fly As Fuck” While Giving Timothee Chalamet The White Boy Of The Year Award

This week's Nothing But Respect was a special one, not only because we got to talk to a musician who has been awarded Best New Music by Pitchfork three times, but also because we got to get the story behind the story of Anthony Edwards giving Timothee Chalamet the White Boy Of The Year Award. What more could you ask for on the eve of the NBA season?

In Part 1, Harry and I were joined by Tim Krell of How To Dress Well. Tim is a thoughtful person and dedicated Nuggets fan, and he had a lot to say about Hunter Tyson getting the final Nuggets roster spot over Kessler Edwards. We got into a lot of Nuggets chatter, the Thunder as agentic basketball team, and the hilarious, busted Sacramento Kings. As I was in the process of asking Tim if he was aware of Devin Carter's hairline situation, his internet suffered a catastrophic failure. What are they hiding from us?
