Finally investigating why SMS stopped working. Now that we have Passkeys in Micro.blog, I think I’m going to scrap SMS as an option, and clear all the phone number data we have for users. It clearly wasn’t used much anyway.

I know a $200 difference isn’t nothing, but if you’re already $800 in for the iPhone 17, I think almost everyone should spring for the iPhone Air. 12 GB of RAM instead of 8 GB. That is going to start mattering with on-device AI models. Having said that, I’m keeping last year’s phone for a while.

In Arlington, Texas, thousands waited in line at a career fair in the hopes of getting hired as an ICE officer. Criminal justice reporter Robert Klemko was there and met a diverse mix of people – a former MMA fighter, a community college student and a former Marine.
President Donald Trump has pushed to deport a million people during the first year of his second term. To do this big immigration crackdown, ICE is expanding its recruiting efforts and incentivizing people to join through large signing bonuses and a pitch to “defend the homeland.”
Host Elahe Izadi speaks with Robert about what he heard from those who signed up and what the potential risks of ramping up hiring and training efforts.
Today’s show was produced by Sabby Robinson. It was edited by Reena Flores and mixed by Sam Bair.

The WNBA regular season ends tomorrow, three short days before the first round of the playoffs kicks off. Thankfully, this website employs the English language's best women's basketball writer, Maitreyi Anantharaman, so we had her back on Nothing But Respect to talk through each of the eight teams.
The format we loosely adhered to is designed to provide something for people at three distinct degrees of locked-innedness: those actively locking in, those locked in, and those locked way in. We then talked through who we thought would be the coolest possible winners of the five(!) plausible championship contenders, one of whom will be eliminated in the incredibly tantalizing four-five series. Oh, also, Harry addressed his recent anonymous comments in The Cut.

This month, there's one story on everybody's minds. I'm speaking, of course, about the Iberian harvester ant queens who can clone ants of an entirely different species to breed a subaltern army of hybrid ants whose only purpose is to serve them. If you, too, have been transfixed by their story and are eager to learn more about these ants' whole sick deal, you've come to the right place.
Who are these ants?

Orbital missions will unlock the next phase of Starship’s development, providing better data on the performance of the spacecraft’s heat shield and allowing for tests of in-orbit refuelling, which will be essential for missions to Mars.
I miss the times when you could pause a video and let it buffer to full so you can play it without interruptions.

Ben Thompson has a wonderful take on yesterday’s event and what it says about Apple overall:
Apple, to be fair, isn’t selling the same sugar water year-after-year in a zero sum war with other sugar water companies. Their sugar water is getting better, and I think this year’s seasonal concoction is particularly tasty. What is inescapable, however, is that while the company does still make new products — I definitely plan on getting new AirPod Pro 3s! — the company has, in the pursuit of easy profits, constrained the space in which it innovates.
