If you have read Giri Nathan's tennis blogs on Defector, you know that no one else writes about that sport with the insight, invention, and humor that he does. If you have just read Defector this week, you'll know that he has a new book out called Changeover that enfolds some of the reporting and writing he's done here and a bunch of new stuff to tell the story of the rising rivalry between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner. It is very good, and I admired it very much. So much so, in fact, that despite interviewing Giri about it twice in the same day—we recorded this episode on Tuesday morning, and Patrick Sauer and I talked to him about it again at our reading series in Brooklyn on Tuesday night—there's still a bunch of stuff I wish I'd asked him about. It's that good, and also I am that bad at interviewing people.

The term superintelligence has been bugging me. AGI hasn’t been achieved yet and some folks are already jumping ahead to AI smarter than humans? I prefer the idea of AI as a team of the most knowledgeable people in the world, each an expert in their field, working together to solve problems for you.

Added this footnote just now to yesterday’s piece on MSNBC’s rebranding to “MS NOW”:
Historical pedantry: from 1975–1979, Microsoft spelled its name “Micro-Soft”, with, yes, an uppercase S. But that’s not camel-case, and that hyphenated spelling is as much a footnote to Microsoft’s brand history as the woodcut Isaac-Newton-under-a-tree logo is to Apple. Microsoft’s logo from that era was very disco-’70s and kind of cool — but while “Micro” and “Soft” were broken across two lines, there’s no hyphen in the logotype.
I’m not concerned about Bluesky’s terms of service — although I’m glad other people are concerned and checking it! — but I do love this sentence that Cory Doctorow wrote:
This is so pro-enshittificatory, it’s like a landing strip for the sole use of Enshittification Airlines, which can land a 747 full of enshittfying nonsense on Bluesky’s users every 10 minutes, around the clock, without worrying about any legal repercussions.
