How ‘Kill Bill’ Changed The Action Blockbuster

How ‘Kill Bill’ Changed The Action Blockbuster
Let's face it, we have been living through a pop cultural age—particularly in cinema—made in Quentin Tarantino's image. Before Marvel, before George Lucas sold Star Wars to Disney, Tarantino made nerd culture mainstream, showing that a movie- and culture-obsessed kid could b...

A lovely MAGA picnic

Mom and dad and the kids are having a picnic in the park of their small town. You can see the bank and hardware store, church and grade school around the park in the distance. The kids are eating salad and corn on the cob with mom, and dad is preparing a BBQ on the grill. It's a standard American family picture, in the style of Norman Rockwell or Edward Hopper except each of the family members are wearing a black balaclava style mask as seen in the image. You may see other families around enjoying a beautiful day in the park, but every one of them is wearing this kind of mask too. A typical American family enjoying a family picnic on a beautiful summer day.

Cultural Capitulation

Cultural Capitulation

This post was originally published on the author's Substack on June 24. It has been republished here in conjunction with Bills Week.

Everybody knows about the MAGA hat. It’s red. It says what it says on it. The content of the MAGA hat is obvious. It’s a team hat, a cult uniform, a panting, sniveling dare for you to say something about it. It is, for better or worse, iconic at this point, the single image or object that exemplifies this movement, the illustration that will appear in future history books so long as Elon Musk hasn’t had Grok “rewrite the entire corpus of human knowledge” by then. But its iconicity is not just limited to its color and its catchphrase. The FORM of this hat matters, in part because it’s such a telling one.

Manu Moreale blogs about Apple products and the trend of distancing ourselves from problematic CEOs:

Do I need to check if the Suunto CEO is a piece of shit to make sure I can wear this watch on my wrist and still feel at peace with myself? Frankly, I think it’s an exhausting way to live a life, and I’d be better off focusing all those energies somewhere else, trying to make something good, something that has a positive impact on the people around me.

The Inspiring Soccer Odyssey Of The Man They Call Bill

The Inspiring Soccer Odyssey Of The Man They Call Bill
To call it a "pleasant surprise" wouldn't quite be right. As someone with an abiding interest in the colorful names and nicknames of Brazilian athletes—my all-time favorite remains that of Leandro Matos Souza, who went by "Gatorade"—I had a hunch that a particular theme week...

I’ve disabled ActivityPub federation for my blog posts again. Too much negativity on Mastodon. I have a lot going on and can’t deal with it. For the rest of the year, for external services just going to focus on Bluesky.

Listening to the new Revolution.Social podcast. First episode is Rabble talking to Jack Dorsey. Jack is a good example of what I was trying to say in my blog post yesterday about criticism. So much hate is directed at Jack. We can disagree with his decisions, but he’s principled and thoughtful.

Let’s Remember Some Bills

Let’s Remember Some Bills

The Buffalo Bills of my childhood are not the Buffalo Bills I live with now. They are certainly not the Buffalo Bills I’ve written about before on this website.

It’s weird to think about in retrospect. The Bills went from clockwork ineptitude to clockwork competence with only a handful of transition years in the middle, from the team I finally saw suit up for a playoff game when I was 19 years old to the team that has won five division titles in a row. From the basement to the top of the league.
