AI Is Dead via The Texas Observer

texasobserver.org/ai-writing-novelist-texas-artificial-intelligence/

I’ve got a post-graduate certificate in artificial intelligence (AI). I’m also an author, and I believe writers and publishers should not use AI in publishing. So that’s why I was disturbed when a reviewer asked if I had used AI in writing my recent coming-of-age novel, Under the Gulf Coast Sun. But the reasons I oppose using AI are not the usual ones you hear.

Micro.blog went off the rails today, for some reason the day I’m out of town an old memory leak decided to blow up into a much worse problem. I think I’ve got it under control now.

In the Bluesky announcement about checkmark verification is the tidbit that 270k accounts have linked their username and domain name. 270k custom domains! That is very cool and a great sign for the open web.

The death of Pope Francis

washingtonpost.com/podcasts/post-reports/the-death-of-pope-francis/?tid=aud_rsslink&utm_source=podcasts&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=post-reports

Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, became leader of the world's nearly 1.4 billion Catholics in 2013. Immediately, Francis made it clear that he would not be a traditional pope. He rejected the customary red slippers of the office in favor of simple black shoes, and h...

Speaking of Objective-C, when I see example code that looks like this:

NSMutableArray<NSString *>* paths

I simplify it to:

NSMutableArray* paths

I don’t think declaring types everywhere improved the language at all. Let a dynamic language be dynamic. 🤪

Experimenting with a special build of Micro.blog for Mac with Gemma 3 (4 billion params) running inside the app. Seems a good balance of download size and RAM, allowing me to run some AI magic on device that might be cost-prohibitive or wasteful on the server.

Don't try to change the world

Silicon Valley encourages entrepreneurs to think in terms of changing the world. I was one of them when I arrived there in 1979 at the age of 24, with world-changing software ready to go (or so I thought). A few years later, I shipped a way of writing that was only possible ...

I find that moral judgement of other people is a waste of time. I have enough trouble sticking to my own values. I find I have to apologize far too often to judge other people. And you never can tell what struggles other people have that explain what they do, you don't always get the right answer, if you don't know what they're dealing with.

Trying to close a book

Another view of me via ChatGPT

People who look down their noses at ChatGPT and its cousins tend to say it's not art. Hardly the most interesting thing, but as I've written, art lives mostly in the mind of the viewer, it's the effect it has on the viewer -- that imho is the art. BTW I can tell when people ...

This is a test. This is only a test. I’m using WordLand to write this post to my website. It’s a new, open source, stripped-down writer’s tool for bloggers. ## An H2 subhead, my liege. WordLand supports Markdown, I understand. It also supports direct bolding and links, of course. An overview of the features is […]
