Now that I have a search engine for my blog, I can reliably look for all instances of Wordle Kitty which was a character I was playing around with last year with ChatGPT. It even comes out in reverse chronologic order, and it's better than Google which ignores a lot of my blog these days. My own search engine doesn't do that of course.

Very small example of a Siri paper cut and why I avoid using it. This morning I got a text while driving asking “what time” something was. I responded with “ten thirty”, and Siri sent “1030” instead of “10:30”. Not a big deal, but there are countless scenarios like this.

When I buy a domain speculatively, I usually put up some kind of placeholder page with a title, picture and tagline. Like feediverse.org. I pushed a link to it yesterday, and got back this possibly snarky response, but still thought provoking. Why isn't there a feed for the ...

TikTok threatening to shut down completely on Sunday — which is more than is required by the law — is such a transparent attempt to influence the supreme court and others. Good riddance. It’s not great if everyone just joins Reels, but we need a shake-up.

A Fragile Cease-Fire in Gaza

Trump AG Pick Accidentally Reveals a Dark, Ugly Truth About 2025 Plans

At her confirmation hearing Wednesday, Donald Trump’s pick for attorney general, Pam Bondi, sought in some ways to project an apolitical aura. But Bondi also refused to answer direct questions about Trump’s threats to prosecute enemies, and dissembled about similar threats from Kash Patel, Trump’s pick to head the FBI. All this accidentally revealed something important. Bondi could not say straight out that she wouldn’t carry out Trump’s corrupt designs, because saying that could disqualify her in his eyes—which is itself the problem here. We talked to former prosecutor Mimi Rocah, who explains how Bondi exposed herself as an unreliable defender of the rule of law—and what that telegraphs about the coming hellscape of 2025.

If you only build a new skyscraper every year or so, downtown Austin doesn’t seem like it’s changing much. Looking at the skyline, it’s familiar — hey there’s the capitol, and the Frost tower, and… — but when I think about the full scope of changes over decades, it’s almost unrecognizable.

Nest Cams

First, we had the Nest thermostat. Gotta have that, right? The first thermostat in the history of time that feels well-designed. Works great. Pleasure to use and look at. Then we got the smoke alarm. Why not — seems nice. Then we got a free Nest Mini as a promotion when Miranda went Android for […]

Was SwiftUI a mistake? Steve Troughton-Smith writes on Mastodon:

Boy do I wish Apple had built a real Apple-quality next-gen UIKit/AppKit-like first-party cross-[Apple]-platform UI framework instead of SwiftUI. The closest thing Apple makes is still Catalyst, but they completely squandered their opportunity to make something better than what came before. Going all-in on SwiftUI is the kind of mistake that will hurt for decades to come

This is a frequent topic on Core Intuition. For the Mac, there are pros and cons for choosing AppKit, Catalyst, or SwiftUI. It shouldn’t be that way.
