Pretend, please, that I am on the ballot. That’s Donald Trump, asking his voters to show up in November. Okay. I can do that. In fact, I think we should take him very seriously, because Donald Trump spent years insisting that the health of the President was absolutely, undeniably, urgently our business. Joe Biden was […]

The author reflects on their cherished 2003 Honda Element, Wanda, symbolizing more than just a car. Through personal stories, Wanda becomes a vessel for memories with deceased pets and acts of service, embodying love and connection. Ultimately, the author decides to donate her, leaving behind a heartfelt note and a soundtrack for future adventures.

I have been unemployed since November, which is a sentence I have repeated often enough that somewhere along the way I apparently started believing it meant I have not been employed, and last night, somewhere between twenty-five students in Indonesia laughing their way through English words some of them had been afraid to say an […]

Today was a full day. More than that, it was one of those days where I caught myself thinking, I live here. Not because I have an address here. Not because I know every little alley or speak the language. It was something else. I felt seen. I felt loved. I found myself wondering how to make […]

I used to think I traveled to see beautiful places. Now I think I travel to understand how beautiful places stay beautiful. This morning, as I walked to coffee, I noticed that many people on my street were dressed for a funeral. I’ve participated in a few funerals here now. They are true celebrations of […]

The Professor said something to me yesterday that I still haven’t been able to shake, we were texting back and forth after I spent the whole day with Ring and his family, and I’d sent him a photo from the backseat of Ring’s car where Ring’s two kids had climbed over the seats to inspect […]

Today, 118 people put on the word AMERICAN for the first time, on purpose, in a room with vaulted wood beams and white fabric draped across the ceiling like something built for a wedding, not a government ceremony. Light came in sideways through all those big windows. Little American flags in every hand. When it […]

A road-worn meditation on Grateful Dead parking lots, Oregon Country Fair magic, Burning Man, old maps, heart maps, and the American kindness that asks us to pull over.

I have just come home to Salt Lake City and Utah is on fire, and I do not mean this poetically, although honestly, Utah does enjoy making everything biblical and dramatic and vaguely Old Testament in July, so here we are, once again, surrounded by dry grass, hot wind, evacuation alerts, smoke maps, firefighters working […]

Friday is the new moon, and I’m taking that as my moment to say this out loud: if you have ever wanted to make something beautiful, bold, and meaningful with me, this is your invitation. PING is a real film with a remarkable team behind it, and now we’re looking for the extraordinary hearts who want to help bring it all the way home. Be early to the right thing.

I am known, in some circles, as a fairy. The Beet Fairy. For years, Vive supplied the cold-pressed beet juice that quite literally helped keep me on this planet. Not as a luxury. Not as a lifestyle accessory. As medicine. As ritual. As one of those stitched-in things your body comes to trust before your mind […]

Yesterday I stood on the far west side of Salt Lake City, staring at a gigantic empty warehouse the Department of Homeland Security bought for $145 million, with plans to turn it into an ICE detention center. A warehouse. Near our airport. In our city. As though human beings are inventory. As though the right […]

Today is Clyde’s gotcha day, and I would like to formally announce: I thought I rescued him… and then he rescued me, filed the paperwork, and started running quality control on my breathing.
Clyde 2.0 is the heavy-leaning, pillow-snoring reminder that rescue is holy work.
Shelters are full. Rescues are stretched thin. If you have room in your life, be part of the solution: adopt, foster, donate, volunteer, transport, share posts, stop shopping for dogs like they’re handbags.
Rescue is love with dirty paws. 🖤🐾

I shaved my head last Monday. Not for fashion. Not for a dare. Not for reinvention as some shiny little brand strategy. I did it because my body needed a receipt.Because my heart kept whispering, we are letting go now, and I needed my scalp to sign the paperwork. Gizmo died. Sundance ended. Not just […]

Tomorrow is my birthday. I’ll be 62. And yes, it is also my father’s birthday. Ironically. Not ironically.Kismet.Habit. A cosmic joke we’ve both been in on since the first day I opened my lungs and learned the sound of his name. It is all I’ve ever known, sharing a birthday with a man like him.And this […]

Pocketfuls of MLK buttons, a quote I can’t shake, and the question I’m asking myself every day: How are we showing up?
