Yoah… the acting was quite good, and I liked the partly suspenseful editing, too. But the plot is bonkers and for this to be entertaining, it's not enough action for my tastes.
Often with short reviews. Might contain spoilers.

Pretty perfect movie, if you ask me. The 12 more or less angry men are all so good. The whole concept of only talking about a murder case after the trial, surfacing ever more details and eliciting more of the jurors characters, was so good. Suspenseful and entertaining. A timeless classic.
This was more high-quality than I expected beforehand. Great story, great acting, great visuals, some good humour, and above all: great special effects. Those kills were really fun and well done. My favourite was the whole action in and around the restaurant. When The Blob gets bigger and bigger towards the end, the effect quality sadly suffers quite a bit, and the end itself lacked a little something. But overall, it's been a very entertaining evening!
Greatly enjoyed this one. The two are just so sweet. So, I loved Woody Harrelson and Juliette Lewis here. Tommy Lee Jones was great, too. Greatly reminded me of Wild At Heart. Story and proposition is great two. Reminded me partly of Nightcrawler. And it is just overall funny and weird with wild camera work, which reminded me of Climax. But I would’ve enjoyed one more action scene like the one at the diner at the beginning.
I liked this overall. It’s a wild chase with ever more intrigues and entanglements coming to light. I especially liked Guy Pearce’s character and performance. But I couldn’t fully enjoy this on a first watch, as this was so fast paced and has this rather complex plot (watching in to me non-native English didn’t quite help, either), that I had the constant feeling of having missed something. Luckily they actually explain more and more towards the end, and I could more and more shake that feeling. Still, maybe a candidate for a second watch.
In the beginning I thought Jake Gyllenhaal’s character is pretty implausible. But then I just enjoyed his and Riz Ahmed’s performances, the pretty night scenes, the suspense and just his sheer dry ruthlessness. And the film also gives you plenty to think about.
Solide Unterhaltung. Der Wald war cool, Max Giermann war cool. Der Tochter hat's gefallen. Wir haben im Kino zu viel Popcorn gefuttert.
Ha, nice! Had a great time with this last night. Maybe I was a little too tired to follow the fast-paced plot and its twists and turns at all stages. But regardless, this was really funny, had great action, great dialogue, and the two detectives were just perfect. I especially like Ryan Goslings acting. A movie I could easily enjoy multiple times.
Wow, I haven't seen this in a long time. And I pretty much couldn't remember the second half. Enjoyed this a lot. The characters, the sets and the visuals in general, the soundtrack. The content is often questionable. It's partly gross, yet cheekily funny, but always entertaining.
The interesting thing to me when watching old classics like this, is how I discover how influential they have been. Or at least I think I do see those references in other movies. Anyway, I saw elements of Wes Anderson, Michael Haneke and Yorgos Lanthimos in there; and certainly forget a whole bunch of others.
Saw this at the Metropol, where the staff gave yet another lovely introduction to the film.
This might be the most disgusting film I've ever seen. And it's not "just" all the guts and gore; it's all the food stuff, too. And all those close-up and wide-angle shots really emphasise it all. It's quite remarkable how this movie made me feel. And those makeup and "costumes": so good! I really wonder how this got so mainstream. Anyway, it's really a courageous piece, directing- and acting-wise. And it's funny, too. It's so over the top, it could not not be funny. The society criticism is not subtle at all, and I found this rather fitting. Writing all this, I kind of want to watch another round. But I'm not quite sure, if I'm courageous enough.
Not too much gore here - although the ending is hilariously excessive in that regard. It's more of a murder mystery. And it has indeed quite a lot of great ideas and encourages you to solve it yourself. Good one. But: Catholics again 🙄. And what's up with that slow-motion water in that aquarium?
A mystery thriller set in the Vatican. And all the gossiping cardinals are no better than ordinary men. Well, apart from the newly elected pope. And then this ending. Catholics 🙄.
I never listened to Destruction all that much. But I had a great evening at this premier at the cinema with friends, the film crew and a few beers (and a whole bunch of other metalheads). Entertaining movie about a sympathetic band and how difficult it was during the pandemic for a band that usually plays around 150 gigs per year.
This is certainly not my favourite Carpenter movie, but I think it was totally fine. Although I prefer those wine-sipping romantic European vampire films that this one mocks. I have criticism regarding the reduction of pace in the middle, that strange love story, James Woods’ annoying character, and general more leaning towards an action zombie movie. But I generally liked the acting and characters, Sheryl Lee slowly turning into a vampire, and the whole splattery action at the party in the beginning is pretty damn good.
In my quest to watch every Jim Jarmusch movie at least once, I finally got to see this one. And this didn't disappoint either. The whole premise of a Don Juan type character, named Don Johnston - played by Bill Murray - on an adventure to find of which of is ex-girlfriends send him a mysterious letter, telling him about a now 19-year old son he didn't know about. His neighbour - who, with a wife, 5 kids, and 3 jobs, is the exact opposite of the Don - excitingly planned the whole trip for him and gives him advise throughout the quest. All those characters and situations are hilarious. And it was fun to notice all those parallels to Jarmusch's other movies - particularly Ghost Dog.
A rape revenge story set in 70s/80s NY. Sounded good, looked great, interesting characters and plot. Good one!
A classic I’ve not seen before. I wouldn’t say one has to know this, but it definitely doesn’t hurt. And I was very much enjoying myself, especially with those "Mondo Bizzarr"-audience at the cinema. The plot is more like a series of scetches and the dialogue is rather peculiar at times, but honestly, everything is so silly and over the top, it’s funny again. And all the sets and props are lovingly done. “Sieg der Liebe!”
Enjoyed this once more. All the characters are great and so well acted. (And good job in casting both Natalie Portman and Winona Ryder, two actresses I occasionally confuse anyway.) It has just the right amount of supernatural elements. And I was reminded how much I like the music from Swan Lake.
Very violent. Very sexy. Very funny. Very suspenseful. Very sweet. Very quirky. Surprisingly metal. Very nose-y. Very entertaining.
Dern and Cage are just fantastic. And so is Dafoe. And everyone else too, to be honest.
Ähnlich wie Teil 2: wieder ganz gute Songs, mit einer unterhaltsamen uns sympathischen Geschichte. Vielleicht mehr was für junge Teenager, aber der Tochter hat's gefallen und somit hatte ich auch Spaß. :)
Nettes Wohlfühlkino. Gute Songs. Tochter happy. Was will man mehr!?
Nice little “slice of life” movie. Every body is so nice. And sweet. It’s funny, too. And it turns out nice in the end. It’s just nice. A little tame maybe. Was ok.
I’m on a quest to watch all Jim Jarmusch movies. This, once more, was right up my alley. The calmness, the humour, the characters. It again featured hilarious dialogues where people don’t understand each other. And towards the end I noticed that the comics the characters are watching seem to give away what will happen next. So I need to watch this again to see what I can discover.
🎶 "When it comes to killing zombies, I'm at the top of my game…" 🎶
Very entertaining and funny musical zombie film. Good songs – I enjoyed the one cited above, the "filthy" one, and the "brand new day" – some good kills, likeable characters, and just a great sense of humour. The whole scene with the snow man is bloody golden.
Not all is perfect – partly the makeup, the effects; and towards the end it loses a bit of tempo – but overall this was a very worthwhile christmas movie.
The kills in this were partly quite nice. But it's always about the eyeballs. I would've enjoyed some more kill-variety. But apart from this, this lacked suspense. And I think it was unnecessary to uncover all of Billy's backstory. This also reminded me of Scream – which I liked – but all characters in this were unlikeable IMO. Little bit of an annoying one.
Eh, no. It's not like this was all bad. But there's absolutely zero backstory to the approaching apocalypse, that fog looked awful, and the characters were all well over the top. And this would've been fine, if the movie decided to go all in on its funny side. But it also had this seriousness. And this was all confusing IMO.
Nice atmospheric middle age murder story. Great characters, great acting, great makeup, great setting, great fog.
The protagonist is like an anti James Bond: no action, no talking, no sex, no drama. And he still gets the job done. And the movie still manages to be suspenseful and entertaining despite all the "missing" bits. The end left me a little confused, but other than that, this was ace. Jarmusch just makes movies I like.
This also has a brilliant music scene with flamenco guitar playing, -dancing and -singing. And it's probably all done while the camera was rolling. I can rarely tolerate music not matching the instrument on camera, but this was the exact opposite. Kudos!
And I enjoyed the soundtrack, too.
One of those watches that I didn’t plan to join. But then Aubrey Plaza appeared as the hallucination old ass of the teenage protagonist’s younger self to tell her about what’s about to come, while she was in the woods with friends taking mushrooms. Unfortunately this didn’t continue as exciting. It’s pretty much a love story. Not really bad, but relatively conventional, which I found a little disappointing given that surprising beginning.
I liked how this looked. And I think the story had potential. But towards the end it gets more and more bonkers and I’m less and less convinced by plot and performances. Was ok.
Well, this was not so much up my alley. Some, or even lots of sequences, might have been meant in a humorous way, but I really couldn't tell. On the one hand, it has these super cheesy relationship and friendship scenes. And on the other, it has endless gun fights and car chases, that were not all that inspiring. Apart from the final fight, which was ok. Not quite my type of action film.
Quite the movie, and quite up my alley. It could be a little more fast-paced IMHO, but other than that, there's lots of silly fun to be had: all that gut and gore, the fights, and so much more in that grandios finale. And that loose head. If you like splatter movies, you'll definitely like this one!
Uff. Mixed bag. Very mixed bag. Mixed black trash bag. Plot is partly eye roller and difficult. And sadly not all that suspenseful the more it gets towards the end. It feels long, too. Some of the gory scenes are actually well done, although some are very over the top and too much in the wrong kind of direction for my tastes. But what makes this worth it, IMO, is Art The Clown: he's really well done - really creepy and evil. His makeup, the way he's moving, that he doesn't make a sound. He certainly has potential to become a new infamous evil horror figure. I'll watch the next ones, just to see how this develops.
It’s shocking, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen this. What’s also shocking is Johnny Depp’s belly-free shirt. And of course all that blood and gore. I just like those sort of gory special effects. And this type of movie. It’s comfort food. This definitely deserves its reputation.
I might have had an overdose of Bond movies. In the end I just wanted this to be over. And I think Bond, too. And so it was definitely time to die, so him and I can finally have our peace again. Look-wise, this was very good (maybe a tad too much CGI), and also had some good scenes. Acting was good, too. But often enough the action was lacking some originality and it was too much everybody-shoots-at-Bond-with-machine-guns-while-he-has-just-a-pistol-and-wins kind of action for my liking. But, maybe I was indeed just over it. Too much eye-rolling sentimental drama again.
“I showed someone your watch today, Q. It blew his mind!” :)
That was a well rounded and satisfying Bond. It looked great, the plot made sense, it features the usual cool Bond dialogue, it didn't take itself too seriously, and some spectacular action scenes. Can't ask for more. Good one!
I found this part of the series a weird one. The pictures are great and much more enjoyable than in Quantum. And I found action, the new characters and all the dialogue much more likeable and interesting again. Lots of great scenes in general. And Javier Bardem was brilliant. But I found the plot was really inconsistent. Towards the end, it's no longer about that mission, and more and more turns into a sentimental nostalgic drama. Complete with Home-Alone style finale. Also, Daniel Craig looked like Boris Becker.
Solid continuation of the Craig-Bond series. But the action, story, dialogue was all not as good as in Casino Royale. But it has a similarly great opening credits song.
Daniel Craig has luminous blue eyes and Sony product placements are all around. But apart from this, Casino Royale was spectacular and entertaining. The stunts and action were all top notch. The poker game was good. The characters were great. It has some very cool dialogue. And overall, the story was fantastic, too. Can recommend!
I really like the soundtrack, which consisted a lot of piano playing. Together with the story and filming, this really created a suspenseful atmosphere. Acting was great, too. But in the end, I was left disappointed, as it was all too ambiguous for my liking. I mean, the characters were all somehow fucked up, but it never got past scratching to surface on any of their stories or personalities.
This didn't fully convince me: maybe it was the occasional drop in pace or a sudden strange dialogue or scene of acting. But overall, this was a very solid movie. Had a great story, really succeeded in portraying the protagonist's paranoia, and was atmospheric, too. And this from 1972. Tutto bene!
I wanted to watch this mainly because its poster is so cool. And the movie itself was ok, too, as far as I remember (it's been a few weeks since I watched this; and I also fell asleep briefly; it's been a long day). Nice 80s horror charm and some nice and juicy hand-made effects. It's all a bit ridiculous, though, of course. "ALIEN! C'MON! ALIEEENN!" *KABOOM* best ending! ;)
I enjoyed this. It had me constantly wondering and wanting to know what happens next. I really liked the quirkiness of it all. But then in the end it left me kind of empty and wondering “why all this?” and “what for?”. All the stories had the same subjects it dealt with, but I couldn’t find any purpose (if there is any), and why it had to be three episodes. So I had the suspicion the movie is just weird for weirdness sake. But maybe that’s just Lanthimos’s thing and I shouldn’t complain. What never seems to disappoint, though, is how he films everything. It’s just fun to watch. Emma Stone was superb once again, but so were all the other actors.
Another Mondo Bizarr flick. Reading the summary, I was actually expecting something way worse than this. This was actually high quality and looked a lot like more famous American movies from that time. But rightly so, it's not as highly regarded: it's just all a bit off and wacky at times. But that doesn't mean it's less entertaining! Just more bizarre. The chase scene is fantastic, the musical part at McD is just great and the ending is just the whimsical cherry on top.
Uff.
Tja, was soll ich sagen. Hat irgendwie Spaß gemacht das mit der Truppe im Mondo Bizarr zu schauen. Prost!
Another classic where I don't know whether I had seen this as a teenager. But I really couldn't remember any scenes. This was fantastic, though. Apart from obvious technological or cultural clues, you wouldn't think this is such an old movie. It really holds up.
Now, the film actually manages to portrait Christine as and actually evil car. The stunts are top-notch - oh my, the whole scene at the gas station! - and the special effects when Christine repairs herself are an absolute sensation. Great characters, too - it's been quite clever how the evilness progressively affects Arnie's own mood.
Bonus was seeing this on the big screen, getting to fully experience the film's awesome sound and music.
Has tons of atmosphere and Nicolas Cage as Longlegs is actually really creepy. Lovingly filmed. And great acting. I thought the plot pace was a little odd (it's high-paced in the beginning and the end, and in the middle quite slow), and the resolution was not all that satisfying. Overall, though, I was really into it, and didn't notice how time flew by at the cinema.
Uff! Brutal! And really menacing and suspenseful. Liked this a lot! The gore effects, that sequence when she enters the other body, and how this looked, sounded and felt in general. A few minus points for missing explanations and the what I felt not-so-logical ending. I'd watch this again!
I wasn't planning on joining Nicole when she put on this movie. But then the characters and plot drew me in. I wanted to know how and why the three ended up where they ended up (the film is very non-linear, which I liked for the most part). The acting was great, too.
But unfortunately, it's downhill from there. It's increasingly less about Art - the only really likeable person - and only very slowly unveils more and more about the relationship between the other two. The soundtrack was irritating. And the ending is not very plausible and it's a collage of infuriatingly endless slow-motion shots.
Another very entertaining part of the trilogy. The story – especially at the end – has its weaknesses IMHO (and I couldn't help but be reminded of Once upon a Time in Hollywood). But this just looks fantastic once again, has great acting, and a lot of excellent scenes.
This really drew me in. It gets increasingly menacing and suspenseful. I think this movie really succeeds in showing how frightening (dangerous even) and really uncomfortable it can be as a young woman (waitress) amongst a horde of men.
Acting was 👌. Hearing some Aussie accent was, too.
Anyhow, I'll now have a Dickin's Cider (sorry! 🫣).
Liked how this looked. Loved Mia Goth's acting, in particular her long monologue and that end scene where she makes faces for a minute or two. The plot could have been a little more focused, but overall a well-rounded, well-entertaining film.
I liked Anya Taylor-Joy's performance. And James McAvoy is good, too. But the movie as a whole did not grip me. I just didn't find it suspenseful. The main character is not menacing enough. And there's way too much going on, and as a result the plot suffers. A bit of an eye-roller.
Such a great plot and so well executed. I assume this is a pretty low budget film, and all the more respect to make it so entertaining. Spooky, suspenseful, with great acting and some nice gory special effects.
It was late when we started this, and I didn't pay full attention the whole time. But this was still a fantastic surprise. A great story with a really creepy dude and a lot of suspense. Never seen it in a movie old movie like this. But it did remind me of Psycho. Generally this was pretty Hitchcock-like. And Hitchcock I like. And so do I like this one. Recommended!
*sigh* Argento! He has really good ideas and can certainly film those, too. But the crazy outrageous story and unbelievable dialogue still annoys me.
Haha. ;-)
Been putting off writing about this one. I guess this could be somewhat watched as a straight crime/voyeur story. But it’s much more subtle than this. It’s also a lot about the relationships and reactions of its characters. And it certainly has its surprising twists – I totally overlooked the detail in the final scene, even though I was looking for something like this. Anyhow, it‘s a good movie and probably better on a second watch. But I‘m not sure if I will.
It‘s been a while; and I mostly seem to remember scenes from Aliens (Part 2 of the frnachise). But this was a great rewatch. I thought this aged extremely well. The menacing atmosphere, the sets, the sounds, the story. A classic for a reason!
It's a very beautiful film about stuff I didn't care about. I should have watched this in a cinema.
This movie is 2.5 hours long, but it easily managed to keep me engaged. I found this to be brilliantly told. You're constantly wondering what might have happened. And whether you can trust the suspect and her view of the story. The dialogues felt very authentic and all was brilliantly played by everyone involved, but I found especially Sandra Hüller's and Milo Machado-Graner's (who plays her son) performances remarkable. Extra points for authentic piano playing.
Woah, haven't watched this in a looong time. But this rewatch was totally worth it. Not much too complain about when it comes to action movies. The atmosphere, the action, that relentlessness, the music, the special effects (which hold up really well, I must say). I'll be back!
Ok, I must say, this was a great movie to pair with The Terminator – which was the second movie that evening. Thematically very fitting, but not nearly as good. It certainly had some good ideas and scenes, but overall, I found this pretty slow-paced and too uneventful.
I very much enjoyed this crime story. Super well told with a great cast. I enjoyed both John Travolta's and Nancy Allen's acting as well as their characters. I like how technical this was in parts. It has great humour (the scene with the auditioning scream-dubbers: pure gold). And is suspenseful. Maybe the ending was a bit too over the top, but otherwise: thumbs up!
This is easily one of the most entertaining movies ever. A curious and naive (in a good and very funny way) female Frankenstein‘s „monster” goes on an exploration trip – in a mostly sexual sense – driving all the men crazy along the way. Lots of very funny absurdity. Fantastic cast – especially Emma Stone of course – great sets and costumes, great dialogue and on and on. Want to watch again please.
Of course, this was pretty absurd. A lot of scenes were just hilarious. But it also contained some serious issues like abusive relationships. And isn‘t a service to imitate the dead just a „normal“ job like everything else? Hm…
Anyhow: good movie. And I also vers much enjoyed the greek original: quite a pleasant language.
Another Mondo Bizarr feature. And this was just 100% fun. It has a lot of Jackie Chan trademarks: great action, quirky humour, likeable characters and a whole lot of breakneck stunts (OMG they had a little boy dangling on the outside of a skyscraper). Very much recommended, if you’re into that sort of film.
It’s always fun watching a movie with the Mondo Bizarr audience. And this was no exception. But boy, this was a bit rough: while the story is simple enough, it’s still hard to follow, it has less action than expected, and it gets sidetracked by too many characters and unnecessary scenes. So, not exactly my thing.
The story certainly has its length. But otherwise there’s lots to like: from the concept of the pods, to the special effects, Jeff Goldblum and Leonard Nimoy, and at last a surprise ending.
This has a good story, and was overall a well-rounded experience. It's still a pretty typical action movie, and has a few clichés. But it's certainly well above average. I was a bit surprised by how brutal some scenes were. It's almost like in a splatter-movie, and really well done. But boy, how they shoot Murphy to pieces is just horrifying. But the film also has some great humor in it: like the super-duper killing robot ED209, which can't descend a flight of stairs and subsequently lands on his back like a helpless bug. Anyhow, can recommend.
I don't know what to think about this. It's so well filmed, and looks so good. And it has lots of good moments. But I think I can't get over the fact that this is then spoiled by nonsense dialogues, a weak story, bad dubbing, and weird music choices. Maybe this is meant to be funny? Is it a parody? I don't know. Weird movie.
So, me and the guys had dinner, and we then went to see this on the big screen on film. It was a great evening. And this movie was enjoyable, too: a great cast with their distinct characters in a dialogue-heavy movie. And up to all sort of shenanigans during a what seems to be a turning point in all of their lives. Quite a bit of macho-attitudes and actions, but overall very enjoyable. Has a great cheesy, silly, over-the-top dance scene. :)
Well, thanks very much for this healthy dose of kiwi accent. VLC autoplayed this for us after Dream Scenario; and it was already late at night, but we couldn’t stop watching. We watched the second half on the next day, though. Anyhow… this was a very enjoyable and silly love story - kiwi style.
Very original and entertaining story. Nic Cage is great once more. The last quarter was not quite up to par with the rest; but other than that, very much recommended.
Stilistisch und schauspielerisch super. Die Story hat mich aufgrund ständiger Umwege etwas liegengelassen. Aber das ist vielleicht auch so beabsichtigt. Interessantes Ding.
A great movie to end the year. Loved how the whole put-those-sunglasses-on-to-see-the-truth stuff was done. Fantastic and suspenseful story, good score, nice action with a hilarious fight scene in the middle. Saw this at the local cinema, which made this a little more special even.
Solid old-school slasher. Could have had some more explanation of the motive for me, but that's about it regarding criticism. The special effects of the kills are ones of the best I've seen. And it has otherwise good action, a good cast, and some good humour.
This was good! It's a bit like Flatliners meets The Sixth Sense. It was suspenseful, had great acting, great pace, and a real good story (although, I didn't fully get it (,yet?)). It's one of the better newer horror movies for sure. And I'd watch it again.
Well, Mr. Anderson! This is another fine film you made here. And luckily for me, the pace is not as high as his previous effort, which makes this much easier to follow. It's still a raid on your eyes and ears, though. But in a good way. But I always feel, one has to watch his film multiple times to have a chance to fully appreciate them.
Once more, the set, costumes, characters, dialogues, his signature camera work are all top-notch again. It's really neat.
Liked how the photo camera of the main character had audible long exposure times where it made sense. And there's a million other things to like. But that makes it also a bit exhausting. I'd still watch it again!
Well, the first half is actually pretty good, where everyone's mostly talking. And the scene with the first kills is fantastic. And visuals and music are great (and one of the trademarks of this film, I'd say). But then it goes downhill. The action is not very inspired. The end drags on forever, and even the music in becomes cheesy. Meh…
Now that's a good Christmas movie! I'm not sure, if I've even seen this before. The Gremlins are very well done. It's funny and gruesome. I have no regrets and would watch it again.
Jeez! Really super. A little strange maybe – in a general kind of way.
Seriously, this is damn good. I'm sure, I have watched Fargo before, but I really had no recollection. And it surprised me again how good this is. The dialogues, the cast, the plot. Everything's great here. It feels like every five minutes the story escalates. And – oh my – feeding his partner into a wood chipper in the end. Uff…
This is a lot like a Hitchcock movie. But more funny, more absurd with more wacky characters. But still with a lot of suspense and a good story. Is it better than the Hitchcock counterparts? I don’t know. But it was a very enjoyable watch.
Just incredible. And tragic.
I thought this looks very good, has good atmosphere, has humor, and throughout quite a few good moment. The end is great, too. But overall, this didn’t entertain me all that much. I found it too long and his co-workers super annoying (without adding much to the plot).
I think this must be one of those movies that introduced certain scenes and props. Liked it, especially how everything escalates in the end and how the increasing phobia is played by Catherine Deneuve.
Two women and their breasts get into a precarious situation high above the ground. It gets points for its vertigo-inducing scenes (although, too much CGI), the suspense and that plot twist. But otherwise it's a bit of an eye-roller.
A wonderful adventure film. Perfect for with your 6-year old. Zoe liked it. Everybody liked it.
Come on Barbie, let’s go party! And what a fun party this is! It deals very well with “the Barbie topic” as well as societal themes, too. But overall, it’s a an amusing film with a gimmicky set and great characters. Which are brilliantly portrayed by the cast. Watching this only once is not Kenough.
What can I say? It was great fun to watch this again with a bunch of my friends. And I would do it again.
This is so evil and dark. This time I wasn’t quite in the right setting, but it still gripped me once again. It’s so well filmed; the audio is great. I just feel like I don’t quite get all the symbolism, which really only is the main topic at the end. But man, the last 15 minutes is just pure horror.
This was better than the original. The action is ridiculously good. It’s still an American navy though. But I like how it relates to the original and that it at the same time doesn’t take itself too seriously. And again watched this in great company (with commentary) which made this all the more enjoyable.
Honestly, this is pretty great! It gets enough points for how this is made with marionettes. Totally over the top (or is it? ;)) and totally entertaining. America, fuck yeah!
I really had lots of fun watching this. If you have the right company, don’t take it seriously, it’s awesome. It’s in some way its own parody. And the action is indeed great I must say. Everything else is pretty cheesy. U-S-A, U-S-A!
Puh! I’m not quite sure if this is meant as a parody. If it is: ok, but it’s really over the top with lots of CGI and unnecessary action. I don’t know. A weird one.
A fantastic story (basically) about a teacher – who seems to be the only sane adult at that school – get singled out and blamed for what’s wrong at a school. It’s tragic and Leonie Benesch plays this absolutely brilliantly. The other cast is fantastic, too. So, I liked this a lot, and for some reason I thought this could have been longer and not be so open-ended.
I'm not too much convinced about the premise: that Laurie – 40 years later – is still obsessed with Michael, and how he escapes (of course!) exactly on Halloween. And then it all peaks in this Home-Alone-ish finale.
But the suspense and slasher-action, the visuals, the soundtrack, the cast, is pretty good, I must say. So I still ended up well entertained.
Rambo just wanted to have lunch in that little town after he found out his comrade had recently died. And then he got persecuted and things escalated.
This really is a great movie, and I always think it has way more depth than its reputation might suggest. The action is great though.
Johnny Depp as a wounded/dead man still walking. Surreal, dreamy, funny, great acting. And the soundtrack is especially noteworthy: it's just Neil Young and his electric guitar, and it all sounds like he's improvising live to the movie. Just great.
Still don’t know what’s going on (and that’s part of the fun). Still very entertaining. Still like this very much!
This was good! A great cast. Credible characters. Some gruesome moments. A story with twist and turns. And a fantastic action fight scene. Only that ending spoils it a little (they kiss!? What?!).
Ok, I do not quite get the grand hype around this. It’s good, though: it’s like a modern or different take on Matrix. With a similar philosophical theme. It’s pretty funny in parts. The fight scenes are quite good. Dialogue is good. But it’s a bit long: the whole universe-switching gets a little distracting towards the end. But overall I can certainly recommend this!
I liked the overall theme and vibe of this movie. It's nicely filmed and Nic Cage is great. It could've been more focused and could have had more bite. Good!
Maybe if you manage to sympathise with the protagonist, you will feel different about this. But I didn’t, and so I found this pretty boring.
The end was really unexpected, though (which is a plus in my book).
Wow. I wasn’t prepared for this much emotion. Much respect Mr. Villeneuve, what a beautiful film! Visually, sonically, emotionally. And the story really comes together nicely in the end. And Amy Adams plays her role so brilliantly! I could easily watch this again once I'm prepared for another onslaught of sadness.
If you see past the partly questionable acting, this is a lot of fun. Quirky, gory, funny with a hint of seriousness and menace. Effects were great! I’m not sure if I like running and talking zombies, but I enjoyed this overall.
This one makes you think. There’s a lot going on, and I felt like it wants to say a lot. A bit too much maybe. I found his a bit long, yet still interesting. I enjoyed Force Majeure and especially Triangle of Sadness more.
Violent and vulgar. Cheap and cheesy. Underwhelming and unworthy.
In the beginning, this had me excited to see where this is going. But then it’s a lot of the same throughout the film without much progression. But maybe that’s the point!? I don’t know. It’s indeed insanely well acted and very funny at times. And it’s certainly quite unique in how it’s filmed. Maybe this needs a rewatch.
This was a wild cruise! An a damn entertaining one! Nothing too subtle going on: just bunch of filthy rich idiots getting what they deserve. Muahahaha. The captain’s dinner is incredible. With Refused’s "New Noise" as the perfect Soundtrack. In den Wolken!
Haven’t seen this in a long time. Was inspired to rewatch it by apodcast episode about it. Again liked it a lot. It’s remarkable, howwell this has aged in my opinion. The dialogue, the filming; thesupposed crime is actually pretty violent (you don’t see it, but theytalk about it). It’s an all around well-rounded affair. And it'sprobably worth another rewatch given all the little details in it.
Not Jarmusch’s best film, but entertaining none the less. RobertoBenigni was the best in this one.
Lovely little episode-movie. Great humour (oh, the scene, where she’strying to make him laugh!), choreography (the plane in the window in thefirst shot of the second episode), visuals and soundtrack!
I think I have a soft spot for those old Italian horror film. The setdesign, the make up, the fantastic old school effects, the music, theacting, the not-taking-themselves-to-seriously. Good stuff, in my humbleopinion.
This could have been something. The Brood is really quite terrifying. But it didn‘t really came into action all that often. Instead, the moviespend a lot of time with slow-paced dialogue. And I think I didn‘treally get what the ending was hinting at.
I thought there was a lot of good stuff in here: foremost thePumpkinhead monster itself – but also the visuals in general. Thecharacters are good too, it even has some well thought out dramaelements. But in the end the sum of its parts didn‘t really add up to awell rounded movie. Was still entertaining, though.
The story is pretty conventional. But I was in the mood for that. Hassome cool effects and is fast-paced and entertaining.
A totally fine movie. Zoe liked it, but in my opinion it’s not the mostappropriate film for a five year old due to quite a few threateninggestures, themes and scenes.
Having just been to Bruges, it seemed fitting to watch In Bruges. I canconfirm it’s not a shithole. Fuckin‘ Bruges. That’s my kind of fuckin’film: quirky characters of a shady „occupation“, a bizarre yet coherentplot, with serious and funny elements, and overall very entertaining. All in just over 100 minutes.
Of course, Joaquin Phoenix is fantastic. And it is visually actuallypretty sweet. But oh man, it’s just 3 hours of absurdities. Way over thetop. Not really my thing.
Compared to Ana Lily Amirpour‘s other films, this was lacking. Somehow the setting and vibe didn’t get me as much. Worse dialogue, and too long. And I have to admit that I find realistic cannibal scenes quite repelling. I’d rather happily rewatch her other movies.
„Dedicated to the ones that had to depart.“ I felt somewhat addressed bythis. And this movie really captured the feeling of being on the road(and returning) so well. This really gave me wanderlust and brought backa lot of nice memories. Great visuals, great words, and – oh man – thatpiano soundtrack! Beau-ti-ful! I want to go back to Nomadland!
Oh yes, thanks for this one, Ms. Amirpour! This was so entertaining! Its atmosphere really drew me in. The soundtrack is ace. And visually is superb, too. Loved all those super-wideangle shots. And the acting! First and foremost by Jun Jong-seo. Just watch her face at the end while the plane starts. So good!
When you think it can’t get any worse, it does. Ever more fucked up shitabout the characters and their relationships gets uncovered.
Great acting all around. And the non-linear plot is also kind of mything. But ultimately this did not go beyond the “totally finefilm”-boundary for me.
“Hello, I’m a Mac.” “And I’m an incest underground monster woman with supernatural strength and I will push in your eyeballs and crack your head open like a raw egg.” „Eh….hehe… Do you know iWork?“
Quite a movie. I didn‘t find it 100% convincing and it lost a bit of suspense after a while. But not a shabby horror movie. And I liked the camera work and the acting.
Re-watched and re-enjoyed this.
Well, a few scenes were funny. But this really isn’t my type of movieand I wonder what I was thinking. 🤷♂️
I enjoyed the general theme of this film, but somehow it didn’t reallygrab me for some reason. Maybe I was just too tired that evening.
Visually this was fantastic, though: especially those kind of specialeffects.
I should probably watch this again at some point.
I found this a little kitschy at times. And the subject matter couldhave been explored more deeply in my opinion. But otherwise an enjoyablemovie with an interesting idea and good execution.
I like Carpenter-films. This one is no exception. From the atmosphere tothe soundtrack to how it’s made: all top-notch. Where it’s a bit lackingfor me, is the story itself and the action. It didn’t captivate me asmuch as his other films did. And I don’t know why that is. Maybe I wassimply a little too tired when I watched this.
Wow! That is a classic for a reason. I haven’t seen this in a very longtime and now had a blast watching this at the cinema. It’s suspenseful, shocking, well-written, well-played, well-filmed, and great specialeffects and costumes. Highly recommended!
This drew me in right from the start. Suspenseful, mysterious, eerielighting, menacing soundtrack. And a Jake Gyllenhaal in top form. Andall of this told in a well-paced and never boring 90 minutes. We didwatch the beginning again, right after it ended. Plus a YouTube analysisafterwards – because we can‘t say we understood this on our own on thefirst watch. But a second watch would certainly not be a waste of time, anyway.
Ok, Willem Dafoe is once again great here. And it’s an interesting and promising new take on Cast Away. And it’s sprinkled throughout with seemingly exciting hints. But then nothing really comes out of them. And that goes on for too long. But oh boy, that one bathroom scene – then cut: to dog food! Disgust-master‘s finest. And I have to live with that now.
Good to get a refresh on this classic. I certainly did not rememberwhodunnit. Maybe a slice too much tomfoolery, but otherwise a solidslasher.
Hellraiser? Hell, yes!
Sure, the effects might partly be a bit dated; but that does not at allimpact this succession in any negative way. Even more than the firstpart, this is a truly evil film. Certainly not a horror movie forbeginners. I don‘t know why I haven‘t seen them before. I missed out!
Saw this the same night as „Dinosaurus!“ at the cinema. Much much betterproduction, though. This got introduced as a „Jaws“ in the woods. Andthis is pretty spot on – minus the class of „Jaws“ maybe. While thishas quite a few weaknesses in dialogue and plot, this was overall asolid movie – if you‘re into trashy old school horror movies that is.
It was a fun experience seeing this together with friends at the cinema. And it had scenes that reminded me of Jurassic Park and Pulp Fiction. Here and there, it certainly had its moments. But man was this oldschool. Trashy and gimmicky. And not something I am used to seeinganymore. I somehow like that I had this experience; but at the sametime, I do not need to have it again any time soon.
I find it refreshing to watch a non-Western movie occasionally. Same with this one. Bong Joon-ho‘s humour is somewhat unique. He manages to put those funny (silly even) elements in a movie while not devaluing the serious topic he‘s dealing with. Although in this one I find the whole stupid-cops-don‘t-make-any-progress-in-the-case-play go on for too long.
I found the camera work to be great. Characters were interesting (somehow the main suspect reminded me of Paul Dano‘s role in „Prisoners“). And the ending was top, too.
Totally fine documentary with a promising bunch of interviewees. Butsomehow it manages to be bit thin in truly interesting nuggets.
Finally, I have seen this movie! And what a treat! Everything’s greatabout it: plot, costumes, sound, acting, sets. And the special effects! And it’s scary as hell – as it should be for a horror film. Lookingforward to part 2!
Wow, we made it through this whole series. And it didn’t end on a high note. This was trash. And I could enjoy some of it. For example, I liked that Jason was this brutal force that just kills. Or the cliché nudity. Or the sometimes quirky charming dialogue. And the scene where he beats the one girl in the sleeping bag with another is just hilarious. But oh man, this was long, the set design was terrible (reminded me of American Gladiators in a lot of scenes), and the characters and the plot: puh. And don’t get me started on wardrobe or props. It was cheesy, too. Anyhow, it is what it is. And this over-the-top rendition is a fitting finale for this series IMO. And it’s good, it’s over now. May Jason rest in peace.
Lovingly made: great lighting, fantastic choreography, great acting andmuch more. But overall unfortunately the plot seemed senseless andinconsequential to me, which made me care less and less as the filmprogressed. Had good things, but I’d rather watch a Wes Andersson movie.
Some aspects were totally fine in this, but ultimately this wasn‘t mykind of movie.
A bloody healthy and funny dose of New Zealand for me.
I would watch this again; to see if I notice some more subtle clues earlier and pay more attention to the individual chapters on their own. The storyline is so well done: it progressively changes the impression you have or had of both Phil and Peter. And in the end I didn‘t know how to feel about any of them really – pity or aversion or simply empathy.
A great film about men and their hardships/obstacles/difficulties they faced and how those manifested themselves in their behaviour and characters in very different ways.
I don’t want to focus too much on the negative, but this film didn’tstir up much excitement in me. Maybe just because it looked dated (and alittle bit like a 90’s commercial). Maybe because I thought it onlyscratched the surface of what it could have been. Maybe because I wasreminded that I personally don’t like Robin William’s acting all thatmuch.
Anyhow, it’s an ok movie. I liked the directly photography-relatedscenes and the monologues or rather the protagonist’s thoughts onphotography.
I wish this was longer.
What happened? I watched a series?! I guess I can handle 7 episodes. Andthis was really good! Loved all the characters, especially Beth Harmon’sand her adoptive mother’s. The plot was great, too. It was very wellacted; I thought all the facial expressions during the matched werefantastic. The film sets looked lovely (the CGI not so much, though),and a lot of piano music meant I enjoyed the soundtrack, too! It was abit long in the middle, but otherwise this was a very enjoyable watch!I’m kind of interested in chess now.
Once again, I enjoyed Leo‘s performance in a movie. Jennifer Lawrence was great, too! And both their characters are well written IMHO. And I do agree with the movie‘s message. But man, is it on the nose! No subtlety whatsoever. Unfortunately it‘s way too long again, too. The first one and a half hours are just dragging. Towards the end, it does get better, and even has a few gags that are actually funny (when Leo amazingly delivers his last TV-speech, and then it cuts to him in the car with the bag over his head: pure gold!). But that unfortunately doesn‘t lift it above its mediocrity. Hm… that sounds probably harder than I mean it. Anyway, not quite for me.
What a morning! Twist after twist after twist.
Nicely filmed, great acting with fantastic dialogue.
My only nitpick is that I somehow found Daniel’s voice to sound somewhat hyper-clear/-real which made it sound a little unnatural.
But overall, this was great!
Grief can be a witch – or a curse. Whatever it’s called, you have toopen yourself up (quite literally) to get rid of it.
The story and topics are important and interesting ones. And overallthis is well made. But it didn’t really grab me for some reason. Maybebecause sometimes it felt to me that the delivering of the horrors wereoverdone – especially the ending. The special effects were sometimesmore of a distraction.
But overall a good film, with quite a few good scenes. I would watchRemi Weekes’ next one.
Production-wise, this is probably the best part of the Friday 13thseries. Camera work, lighting, sound, are all at least one level up fromthe usual production quality.
It starts very strong in my opinion. But then it goes into thissmall-American-town kind of vibe, which I don’t know, if it fits. Onitself this is a solid film, but in the series, this is the odd one out(so far – haven’t seen “X”). The special effects à la “The Thing” or“Alien” are totally my thing, and were probably the best thing about it.The characters were a bit too “Police Academy”-ish, with The Duke beingborder-line annoying.
In conclusion: a solid movie, but I feel like this would’ve been betteras a one-off rather than being part of the Jason-franchise.
This is more like “Jason takes the ferry” – because Manhattan content isindeed a bit thin. Anyhow, I liked this for the most part. Certainly oneof the better ones in this series. This has quite a bit of humour. Ienjoyed the stunts. The cheesy soundtrack, NY clichés and a nice guitarscene are not to be discounted, either. Solid!
I’m probably wrong about this one. Because I found this to be so bad, I question my own judgement, given all those other overwhelmingly positive reviews about it. But having been through it, I now also question my own favourable review of its predecessor “Knives Out”.
To begin with, this is wayyy too long. It tries very hard being trendy. And funny. Well, I didn’t laugh. It was just silly. Most folks’ acting got on my nerves. The story is pretty constructed. It wasn’t suspenseful. I didn’t like a lot about the filming and editing itself. The ending is just ridiculous. I’m sorry, but It’s been an eye roller for me. And again, I’m probably wrong. Maybe I just didn’t get it.
Well, merry Christmas! This is such a downer!
I think this was very well made and I felt it was nuanced enough toshine a light on opposites sites of what can be a very complicatedtopic.
I can recommend this, if you want to be informed about this topic. Justdon’t expect to not feel depressed afterwards.
Lovingly made. Good soundtrack. But not quite my cup of frog’s breath.
My kind of movie! A story that could well be true. Great dialogue, perfectly delivered (Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson are just 👌),lots of attention to detail, interestingly filmed, great charactersthroughout, funny, heartbreaking. Remarkable front to back!
Loved the atmosphere of this film. And that it’s filmed in black andwhite. So, visually, this was already nice. Pair this with an Iranianvampire girl protagonist, great humour and a top-notch soundtrack andyou have a very fun movie!
I probably didn’t fully appreciate V’s lyrical outpour, but I stillenjoyed it very much. Lot’s of “1984”, conspiracy-theories themes and aninteresting master-apprentice kind of relationship. Nice one!
Jason must stink for miles by now. It’s a miracle he’s still able to surprise-kill anyone at this point.
For me, same is true as with part 6: not the best, not the worst (I think?!). I somewhat liked the ending when Jason’s “face” is revealed and everything explodes. The supernatural hocus-pocus wasn’t that bad either.
Oh, yeah, and I found the very ending hilarious where the one firefighter shows the other where there’s more fire to extinguish – as if that wasn’t obvious.
On to part eight…
This episode certainly has humour! Jason seems to be surprised by hisown new-found super-strength. And that makes for some funny kills.
It’s mostly fun to watch (if you’re into that stuff). We certainlyalways have an enjoyable evening progressing through this series. Butultimately, it suffers from the same issues most other parts sufferfrom. Not the worst so far, but no the best either.
Ok, I have much to complain about with this one. This feels like 80% endless action scenes and 20% story. If you’re into those bullet-time, kung-fu, wire-flying, super-CGI, camera-flying scenes, that will be just your thing, I guess. But I found this eye-rollingly boring. This could have been a one-hour film. It’s not like I dislike all of it; there were certainly good scenes – even partly said action scenes! But overall it’s way too long and unsubstantial. It’s even like the story didn’t progress at all in this.
At least Trinity could simply ssh into a computer and disable the emergency power supply of that building with a simple terminal command. Much more realistic than those UIs in their real world.
And it had RATM in the ending credits.
What a likeable dude, this John Carpenter. Just doing his thing, makingthe films he wants to make; not giving a shit what others think.Although having “The Thing” flop commercially really got to him. And hehad every right to be upset about this; because it’s such a terrificfilm. Anyhow, this documentary gives lots of insights about his carrierand his filmography. Worth a watch, especially when you’re into hiswork!
A great documentary about a great album. Lots of fantastic interviewswith the people involved as well as notable critics of the time. It’s alot about how this album came to be and what its unexpected successmeant for Nirvana and music (-history) in general. Some excellent livefootage, too.
Still not much to complain about. Such a classic!
Damn! This film!
This is very much a film for grown-ups. Enjoyed the avalanche ofconversations and happenings triggered by that one incident. It‘s attimes very subtle and overall well written. Maybe the ending bit was alittle forced. But other than that, I can recommend this!
Wow! This had it all! In 1968! Slow zombies (or „ghouls“), and lot‘s of them that then do indeed get dangerous, TV and radio broadcasts about the outbreaks, flesh- and gut-eating, a child zombie slaughtering and feasting on its parents, conflicts between the living, boarded doors and windows, zombie hands reaching in, stuffed animal heads, power outage, eerie lighting, an escape mission gone wrong, and a mean end etc etc. Sure, it also has some shortcomings, but overall I was left super-impressed with this one. Was way ahead of its time!
Saw the restored 4k version at the Metropol. It looked fantastic!
Woah, ok. It‘s all fun and games until that plot twist. And then it hits you straight in the guts. So this is not a film I can recommend for some light entertainment evening, but I think it‘s absolutely worth a watch, as it has such a gripping story, great acting and is masterfully filmed and edited IMHO.
Although a little constructed, the idea for the story is actually notthat bad. But the execution is too long, unsuspenseful, mostlyrelatively boring, and – once again – full of clichés. Sorry, Jason.
This is a very silly British rom-com in which a new couple go on their first camping and sightseeing trip together and he introduces her to his quirky hobby; she finds interest in it, quickly gets better than him at it - leaving him devastated. This entertained me well.
So I’m left with the pictures of a broken foot, a split lower arm and an endless series of ass-births. Puh! That was totally over-done for me. “Oh c’mon, it’s enough now”, is what I thought during the ending. If this wanted to be shocking, it achieved that! But I found it just wanted to be shocking without real substance. It detracted from the – actually pretty straight forward – message. But maybe I didn’t get all the symbolism and it was all so much deeper. This was scary, though, I give it that. And I liked quite a few other elements as well. But that extreme ending spoiled this for me somehow.
I very much appreciate that people made a movie like this with all itsold-school costumes and effects. And this part really works and is whythe trailer immediately appealed to me. But ultimately andunfortunately, this is a lot of silly nonsense that even makes its justabout 70 minutes runtime seem long.
This film is an audio-visual delicacy. If you’re into Metal, you are not only my friend, but I’m sure, you too will enjoy this – if purely on the visual level. But it’s hard to not dig the soundtrack, either. I would guess this is great on drugs. Or unbearably terrifying.
A lot of scenes are reminiscent of David Lynch’s style. The story however is not: it is very straight forward, which I found surprising given all the wild trippy visuals.
The acting is overall great, and I indeed enjoyed Nic Cage’s performance a lot. The action and fight scenes are great, too. It’s funny, but also serious. However, there’s no focus on the latter, I’d say.
It’s certainly a unique experience. And one I could experience again!
(Oh my god, the Cheddar Gobblin!!!)
This is quite the spectacle! A beautiful, violent, serious, funny, well choreographed and well acted “me too” middle-age spectacle. The three different perspectives of the same plot is the kind of thing I really enjoy. No exception here. The only thing we found irritating occasionally was the language: both the actors’ accents as well as the words seemed way too modern. But that shouldn’t stop one from enjoying this a whole lot!
Oh dear. The fifth movie that day. I was actually looking forward tothis as I was keen to watch another Sam-Raimi-Bruce-Campbell movie. Thiscertainly has some good scenes! But overall I found the jokes, dialogueand effects overly silly. I felt like this was more about the specialeffects than anything else. And those felt incredibly dated. Nah, sorry, didn’t like it much this time around.
The fourth film we watched back-to-back. It was kinda hard taking thisseriously after having watched Hot Shots 2, which basically parodiesevery second scene of Rambo 2. This was still ok, I guess, but I wasn’tthat attentive any more and half-missed the ending.
With six others in a hut in the mountains and it’s raining all Sunday:what do you do? We just kept watching silly movies. And this one isindeed meant to be, voluntarily! I remembered quite a few scenes, sothis was a little nostalgic. I think this still has nice ideas, wellexecuted. But yeah, it’s super silly.
I was primed with that this is basically the same movie as Bloodsport. And I agree. But nothing could prepare me for that hilarious dancingscene!
Usually not really my cup of tea, but I watched this with six friendswho know this in and out. And this made this special, as I not only gotto watch this fabulously cheesy movie, I also was enlightened by theirexpert commentary.
This had some fun characters, corny music, oh-my-god-the-clothes!!, anantagonist that’s indeed super evil (in a total unironic good way); andyeah: splits!
Based on a true story!
I had a great time.
Death is polite in this one and often knocks on the door first before slaying you to pieces. I found The Fog itself to be a little silly maybe, but that might’ve just been the intention. Overall it’s great fun, if you’re into old-school horror. The jump scares are effective, the atmosphere menacing, and Carpenter’s pictures and music do the rest.
The one thing that I really noticed were the scene transitions. Theywere quite something! And given this must have been all done analoguejust impresses all the more. The whole misunderstandings and increasingfear and paranoia that overcomes the protagonists is really wellportrayed. There’s just a lot of great scenes in this one. And really Ionly noticed now as I write about this. I might have been not thatenthusiastic right after the film ended, but now I kind of wanna watchit again.
I like old sci-fi movies like this. The special effects and Carpenter’saesthetic just have something about them. The over-the-top villain withhis over-the-top car. All the “modern” computer graphics. Just great. And I enjoyed Carpenter’s music, too! The story and movie itself mightnot be just my cup of tea (anymore), though. But it’s certainly bad-ass.
This might have been a bit too long, but other than that, there’snothing not to like. Another murder mystery, that could have only beensolved by the great Hercule Poirot. The funny dialog and quirkycharacters make this worthwhile alone already. And as a whole Icertainly can not not recommend it.
This is one of those movies where actually not that much is happening.Like an anti-blockbuster. It’s subtle, a little philosophical. And allabout the conversations and characters. It’s funny and serious at thesame time. With wonderful performances of all the actors! First andforemost of course the one of Harry Dean Stanton. But it also remindedme how much I enjoy David Lynch as an actor.
Beautiful!
Yep, I liked this! It was partly quite disgusting – more so than most horror flics I’d say – but I won’t complain about that. But it had great humour and a pretty original story I’d say. And it has this meta level and “maybe play with the timeline/references to the past” thing going on (which you only really notice at the end and in the credits), which I don’t know if this made a whole lot of sense, but I’d try to find out and watch the movie again. Bonus point for Chelsea Wolfe soundtrack.
Meh. I know this is a cult classic – and that’s why I wanted to see it –but I didn’t like it that much. I appreciate the story, but I felt theexecution was lagging. I couldn’t easily follow the plot. After readingthe Wikipedia article on it, I noticed that I think I understood most ofwhat happened. But certainly not everything, and it was more work thanentertainment.
After the two previous not-that-great instalments of this franchise, this was again very good! Jason is just evil, menacing and capable, thekills are much more creative again, it has suspense, great stunts andoverall fantastic humour. On to part 5…
A beautiful film! I would’ve probably liked this even better as a teen. But I’ve just now watched this. Still somehow things felt somewhatfamiliar.
I did only see the German dubbed version, so I think it’d be worth it toat some point see the original.
At first I thought: ah, this seems a little too silly and old-school; doI really want to watch this? But then it convinced me more and more.
It’s pretty scary stuff. Plus super-violent and splattery. And thatending!! Old-school effects galore!
Remarkable film. Didn’t regret this at all!
Maybe towards the end, it’s a bit longer than necessary. But other thanthat I was again very well entertained for almost 3 hours.
The splatter is just so over the top it’s ridiculous! And so much fun.Despite the serious topic. Poah, and that first Mandingo fight scene inMonsieur Candie’s mansion is almost unbearably violent and cruel.Justified IMO, but bloody hell!
Acting, script, pace, etc. all perfect. Very satisfying revenge film.
This was more of a dumb-phone than a smart-phone. The supernatural neverexplained, unnecessarily violent in places, constructed jump-scares, andkid-characters that weren’t believable. I don’t know why Ethan Hawkeeven “starred” in this. It’s also a weird mix of some highschool movie,“Silence of the lambs”-style thriller and “the sixth sense”. But inboring. I’m sorry!
Objectively, this wasn’t a good movie. It just wasn’t suspenseful atall. And the ideas? Meh!
We still had a great evening, though! Part 3 is missing in ourcollection, which held us back from continuing the series. Luckily Udocame around with the DVD box set, so that we could finally continue. Wewere made aware that this was filmed in “3D”, featuring the usual “woah, something’s flying towards the camera” moments. Hilarious! So, this andits trashiness in general entertained us very well.
23 shows in 45 days all over the world. Made possible by using their ownplane, piloted by their singer Bruce Dickinson. You get to know the bandmembers – a very likeable bunch – and it includes live clips of theirhits. What’s not to like? Right: nothing!
As far as Zombies movies go, this certainly does not deviate from the usual plot. But the Zombies are filmed in an interesting way, emphasising their insanity and speed. I prefer my Zombies rather slow and clumsy, though. But this definitely had some good scenes! Some special effects were sub-par unfortunately. But overall I was well entertained. The characters were good, and I liked the sad yet beautiful ending.
I thought this had potential. But it was a little boring I’m afraid.Predictable, average acting and the constant wide-angle shots wereannoying. I’m probably too critical, I’m sorry.
It feels just right that Thomasin survives her naive religious family. I'm sorry for her siblings, but the parents just deserved to die. For god's sake, they had glass windows back home in England. "Glass windows"!!1! Who in his right mind leaves behind *that* and puts themselves in a dire situation like this!??
What happened to Aaron Swartz is so unjust and tragic. But I guess thatfate is almost certain when you uncover injustices or crimes the USgovernment and institutions do not like; when you go against the stream.Doesn’t matter if you’re a kid (that’s morally right, too).
But this is not only depressing. It also celebrates Aaron’s victoriesand general accomplishments.
On a side note: it struck me as remarkable, that the internet allowed athirteen year old kid to collaborate with adults on the spec of RSS. Idoubt this would have happened in real life, simply because ofartificial societal hurdles and/or adult arrogance.
As appropriate for the Easter weekend, we watched a flick with a rabbitin it. And I still don’t know what to make of this. I certainly like theperformances, especially of Jake Gyllenhaal. And it has a nice creepyand mysterious vibe. But in the end it left me wondering what this wasabout. Love? Selflessness? And I felt the movie wanted to explain how itall worked, but then didn’t!? I should probably watch this again sometime.
First time in the cinema with Zoe. We had a good time. But at 4yo Ithought this was probably a bit much for her – although she liked it andpayed attention the whole time. But the fights, the whole YouTube-andsocial media follower-spiel and a long non-trivial story was pretty muchall new to her. But hey, you have to start somewhere. And when she likescinema, I’m all for it. :) The movie itself was fine, although itprobably tried too hard to be hip and modern (but what do I know).
Start to finish a suspenseful and very captivating journey. There’s notmuch to complain about. Loved the camera angles and the sound. And thewhole build-up is fantastic. Ace!
If a lot of scenes and the plot in general wasn’t so shocking and thelanguage not as coarse, I would say this could almost be described asbeautiful. It’s beautifully choreographed – both in a dancing kind ofway, as well as a cinematography kind of way. But it’s a choreography ofa horror trip. And the film takes you along for it.
Those monsters and the cave setting were actually really well done andit had some good moments. Unfortunately the plot and characters were notof the same quality leaving me indifferent to how this continues orends.
I do enjoy some good Jackie Chan stunts. And this had quite a few goodones, if I’m being honest. But overall I had trouble staying motivatedto continue watching. The plot itself is mediocre, the movie is way toolong, and the jokes are almost annoyingly silly. I probably would’vewritten more favourable words if this had been a (max.) 90 minute affairinstead of the 110 it actually was.
Ok documentary. Made me want to watch even more of his movies again.
We were in a mood for Tarantino and decided to watch his debut. And itwas kind of nice to watch this right after The Hateful Eight, as Idiscovered that they share quite a few similarities.
Rewatching this after a lot of years, this was a great refresher. It’sstill his weakest movie, but everything else but a waste of time.Especially enjoyed Harvey Keitel’s performance. And that credit-scoreCoconut song.
A Tarantino film is always a guarantee to entertain me. This one mightbe not have a satisfying ending as his other movies, but nevertheless,it’s great. Love Ennio Morricone’s soundtrack!
I come right out and say it: this is a lot like “The Big Lebowski” – butnot as good. The film was too long. That’s mainly because the story wastoo confusing to me to actually really care about what’s going on.
But individual scenes were very funny and enjoyable. Loved theperformances of Joaquin Phoenix, Josh Brolin and Katherine Waterston.Actually I liked much about how the movie was done otherwise. Butunfortunately, I found the parts greater than the whole.
Oh my god. This is a weird one. After initial doubts in the beginning, Iended up really enjoying this one. Beyond the brutal and disgustingparts is this actually rather loving relationship with the “father”. Iwas constantly on the edge of my seat wondering what’s going to happennext.
Visually great. And Agathe Rousselle was amazing!
I’m sometimes reluctant to watch older movies (it’s from 1974). But Ishouldn’t have had this concerns before deciding to watch this. Justoverall great whodunnit fun, with great acting. And pretty hilarious, too.
I don’t think I have anything good to say about this one. A combinationof kitschy and advertising-like visuals and a weak story with borderlineannoying music. I’m sorry.
The gun fight in the middle of the night is a great start into the storyabout this assassin brother duo. While their quest is already gripping, this movie is as much about relationships and life in general. And thiscombination made it special and a very enjoyable watch.
This film will hopefully also make you appreciate how much morecomfortable life is in the 21st century (in the so called “developed”world anyway).
This was a weird one. For me, this was partly (and maybe involuntarily)too cute and/or funny, which I felt was not fitting to the overallrather dark – almost menacing – atmosphere. Which I liked. Just like theacting and the whole setting. Hm. A “mixed review” I guess.
Some proper old school sci-fi. With fucker Charlton Heston. I think Icould recognise the influence this had on other movies. So I think itdeserves its “classic” status. Loved the end: “You’ve go to tell them!Soylent Green is…”.
But man, the scene between Thorn and Shirl in the bedroom during the“furniture”-party… what was that? Lol.
Yep, good entertainment. Funny, good music, and a great cast. I foundthe storyline sometimes a little bit all over the place, which is my onecomplaint. And I would’ve actually loved to hear/read more of that finalarticle he wrote for Rolling Stone.
A wonderful portrait of Florian “Doc” Kaps, who saved the last Polaroidfactory from being demolished and resurrecting Polaroid film. Thisdocumentary is mainly about this, but it’s also about his other projectsthat followed and all things analog and how and why it’s having acomeback.
I loved this and would easily watch this again. The only criticism Ihave is that the bit about Facebook should have been shorter – althoughI thought it’s ok to be in there.
And what a beautifully filmed ending, Barry Lyndon style.
I accidentally rented this movie when we actually wanted to see thefirst one in the series. And since we had started this one already, weonly had 48 hours left to watch this second instalment.
And this wasn’t as good. Yes, it was (partly) funny (oh, boy, that scenewith Steve Carell “announcing” the weather!), but everything was justover the top. There were not many new ideas, instead everything frompart one was dialled up to 11, and it kind of gets on ones nerves.
Soundtrack was again pretty groovy, and the media criticism wasn’t bad, either.
I don’t even remember how or why we decided to watch this. But it wasactually quite funny. Easy to digest entertainment and some really funnyscenes. We enjoyed the soundtrack, too.
Some interesting insights into how Kubrick worked, what he thought abouthis films and how they were made.
Made me want to (re)watch his movies.
So, we had a bit of a Argento theme going last weekend. This reminded mea lot of Susperia, but was not as good unfortunately. Visually, yes, very nice. Great ideas and scenes once again. And that whole hauntedhouse theme. But storytelling was a bit all over the place and I wasleft wondering what the purpose of certain scenes were beyond “let’s putthis cool scene in there, too”. Still: certainly not a wast of time thisone!
This had a bit of a slow start and the acting was partly a bit amateurish. But overall, this was a very enjoyable watch. The story was very good overall, it had suspense, and some scenes were just great. The whole sequence with the dog! Or the grand finale. I mean, he was standing *exactly* behind him!
And it’s all fine, chopping off limbs and murder people in unimaginable ways. But when their friends then just shrug and get on with it, that’s just next level crazy stuff!
While I did come to enjoy cycling videos, this wasn't for me. It waslacking context, editing was terrible, and some driver's attitude andmad skills rubbed me the wrong way. But I might just be not familiarenough with the whole bike messenger, alley cat race scene.
There was some great driving, though! And the filming was probably veryunique at the time. I mean, come on, two comparatively big cameras on ahelmet (there were no GoPros at the time), plus more mounted on thebike, and then keeping up with drivers racing through dense traffic, producing useable footage. That certainly get some stars from me.
In December we watched this as Zoe’s first feature-length movie. It wasa good choice: the “bad guys” weren’t all that bad, the action wasmoderate and it was just 70 minutes long or so.
We all enjoyed this and Zoe got a first taste at paying attention to astoryline for more than the 15-20 mins she’s normally accustomed to.
Hm… I liked the characters and dialogues for the most part. But the build-up was way too long, leaving me questioning if this indeed is a crime/mystery movie. Meh. The house is very cool, though!
As I hoped, this was a good fit for my slightly hungover self. A simpleplot, no surprises and some good old-school special effects.
But it was very obvious and (because of that) a bit unintentionallyfunny: I thought a lot “say what!” during the dialogues. And the actingwas all so keen, over the top, and the characters were all so damninvolved in their quest and full of clichés, putting a smile on my face. But the smile was only short-lived, because you know it’s really seriousand you want them to succeed.
A great movie! I love a good dialogue and this has plenty of that. Plus, well thought-out characters, very well played. And it has Steve Carellin it!
Maybe the ending could have had more bite to it (I don’t even know whatI mean exactly), but other than that, this is very much recommended!
This was quite clever. And funny. I enjoy a good time travel movie. Notthe best of its kind probably, but definitely an enjoyable watch!
Persuaded Nicole to (re-)watch this with me. I still found thisentertaining. And it brought nostalgic feelings back.
I watched this for the first time in English. And I must wonder why –why??? – they didn’t put in just a little effort into making the Germandialogue realistic.
Everyone is so damn cool in this. But overall, a solid movie, althoughthis is not the kind of (action) film I enjoy all that much anymore.
This was good! And I was quite surprised of the crude language. I didn’t think everything in the plot made sense, but it was still anentertaining watch. And it must be one of the first (horror) movies thatfeatures the telephone-spiel and the Killer-POV shots.
I generally enjoy a good “Kammerspiel”. But I found this to be ratherboring. I’m sorry.
This was a remarkably written movie. Very sensitive and probably quiteaccurate to be honest. And I noticed I wasn’t quite used to seeing gaycontent. Good movie overall. Would have been better, if I didn’t findmost main characters so unlikeable.
That was alright! Mostly I think because I generally seem to enjoy movies about bands. And to my relief, how the actors played their instruments was pretty good (because when they don’t, it usually ruins a film for me). It was all well done in general, but a little too mainstream-y for me I guess. That chicken-“Gallileo”-cut was brilliant. Solid movie!
This was emotional. Since becoming a father, movies including “something bad or sad with children” hit me way harder than before.
Anyhow, this was still a good one. Although a bit conventional. But acting and dialogues and all the subtle interpersonal relationships and emotions as well as the dealing-with-grief topic were really well done. The setting in the winter was great, too. And the real-life cases this story is based on is commendable – and is something I wasn’t aware of to this degree.
That one was unique. One of those unique things was the many different characters and stories. And then they die or you don’t really know what happened or will happen to them. The humour is unique, too – and I liked it, although I found this unfitting at first. The combat-scenes were a bit over-the-top for me. It is also pretty cruel at times. It includes plenty of social criticism. It’s a bit of a trip this one. The more I think about it now, the more I want to watch it again (which is often a good sign). And it somehow reminded me of one or more other film(s), but I can’t put my finger on which one(s).
Fiona Oakes’ running achievements are incredible. But her personality might be even more inspiring. Quote from the movie’s official website:
With overcoming her own adversity, Fiona’s true drive to achieve incredible feats of speed and human endurance are motivated by a deep desire to raise awareness for the plight of animals. Her achievements help fund a 450+ animal sanctuary that she takes care of every day.
Interesting that this sequel starts immediately where part one ended and continues the very same night. And I think this was good. It’s a bit much with Michael Myers’ invincibility, and not as good as the first part, but other than that, solid slasher territory.
This is quite a trip! As usual for Wes Anderson, this has lovingly made sets and scenes, is funny, fast-paced and has an all-star cast. I definitely enjoyed it – but it was a little too much on the first watch. There’s just so much detail and complexity in the individual episodes – and even single shots – that my concentration was draining rather quickly. I probably want to watch this a few more times. And in slow-motion. And I don’t know if that’s good or bad – or what my final verdict would be. Talking about this movie afterwards was definitely a lot of fun. I say: go watch it!
A series of uninspired kills and full of clichés. If you’re into (classic) horror movies (like me) this might still be an enjoyable watch. But it’s certainly not as good as the first part, and there are certainly better horror movies out there in general.
This movie didn’t have any elements in it that you’d call spectacular. It’s subtle. To me, it was about relationships, and prejudices or how a first impression of a person can be wrong. And about the setbacks and victories – big and small – of life.
Entertaining and somewhat tongue-in-cheek documentary about the Berlin music and art scenes during the 80s. All told through the eyes of narrator Mark Reeder. If you’re into music in general or into “Die Toten Hosen”, “Die Ärzte”, Nick Cave, “Die Einstürzenden Neubauten”, Jörg Buttgereit (and many more) in particular, you’ll enjoy this!
“What a nightmare!” was my comment while watching this movies. And I meant that from the mother’s perspective, which is the one you get to see as the viewer.
This film made me really uncomfortable. And I applaud it for this! And feeling uncomfortable is appropriate and makes perfect sense, too! But that sense had to explained to me, to be honest. Despite the confusing plot (at first), I was all on board with the movie. Until this over-the-top ending – then I really wasn’t sure what to make of this movie. But Bernd gave me a hint regarding the metaphors afterwards, and then – as already mentioned – it all made perfect sense. And I loved it! And I will probably watch this again some time!
Reminded me of Haneke’s “Funny Games” at times. So yeah, if you’re in for some light and feel-good entertainment, this is not the movie for you!
Was ok. Overall, of course, very well made and very cinematic – worthy of a bigger screen than we have at home. And I liked the non-linear narrative. But if it was meant to be emotional at the end, I didn’t feel it.
A great plot! Great acting. Very well filmed and very well made overall. But a little too conventional – despite the outstanding story. And maybe “Thriller” is just not my genre (anymore). If it is yours, I can recommend this.
This must be the least good Coen brothers movie I’ve seen. I don’t know what to make of this. Not unlike “Au Poste!” you could somewhat revel in the absurdities and misfortune happening to the protagonist and his reactions to them. But the whole Jewish references just confused me. I guess it’s much better when you’re Jewish or at least familiar with their customs.
I did very much enjoy the first film in this series when I finally watched it not long ago. But this one didn’t grip me and I had to roll my eyes way too often.
A movie without any cuts and you really feel like you are self part of this adventure through Berlin with Victoria and the four guys that ends with these phenomenal acting performances which were incredible high stakes given the movie is over two hours long.
An absurd interrogation in a murder case. Claustrophobic, confusing, unsettling, funny. Did I mention “absurd”? Definitely recommended. I still haven’t fully coped with that oyster scene.
Wow! Just terrific! You really get a feel for what dementia might feel like. The set was amazing. The dialogues were perfect. And of course, the acting was splendid – especially of the two main actors Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman. I feel like there are so many subtle details in this movie that I hadn’t time to fully process. I could easily watch this again and again.
This was ok. But not more. It was a pretty straight forward story. Indeed not for you, if you can’t stand (graphic) violence. What the protagonist’s transformation does to his family relationships was unconvincing in my humble opinion (and so was the change in character of his son).
I didn’t think I could relate to an Octopus so much. This film is a wonderful documentary about a remarkable and almost tragic relationship between a man and an octopus. Amazing footage, brilliantly told.
What a trip! It’s quite the (shocking) story. And both the plot and action are brutal and certainly not for everybody. And it’s occasionally even funny, too. I don’t know. It’s unique. In a good way. And was a welcome change from all the hollywood-y movies one consumes.
Okay. The whole setup and plot was actually quite good and promising. And I found the scary scenes to be quite good, too. But as much as this film spent on story, atmosphere and setup, just as little was spent on explaining everything (almost anything). So in the end I found this a bit disappointing.
A movie I could watch again. You never quite know what’s real and what isn’t or wasn’t. Throw in some uncomfortable dialogues, manipulative behaviour and great acting, and you have an interesting watch.
This is a classic isn’t it? It was my first watch, though. And I tend to like movies that play in space. This one was no exception.
It was maybe a bit too much action the whole time, but other than that, a solid movie with a more classic storytelling (fair enough, since this was released in 1997).
One scene that was involuntary funny to us was when the captain watched the horrifying things that happened to the previous crew on the video log and then says with a straight face: “We’re leaving!” We had a good laugh.
A rewatch. And totally worth it. I like the whole menacing atmosphere – both on earth and in space. The story is great, too, altough I’m still not quite so sure whether I understood everything.
With almost three hours in length, this is a movie I did not find too long. On the contrary: it could be even longer to explain things in more detail. I think the plot would have made a great TV series.
And I’m also not quite sure what the movie is supposed to tell the viewer. But my current short interpretation goes like this:
I could totally see myself watching this a third time.
This wasn’t bad. I certainly like the acting of the two. But 60+ instead of 80+ minutes would’ve made this more gripping. I’m sure this film was a big influence to the makers of Host.
This was a waste of time. It’s just not something I enjoy (anymore?).
Honestly, the only thing that made me laugh was how strangely similar this one actor looked to a young Jackie Chan.
What can I say? I’m always nicely entertained by Tarantino’s movies. The plot, the characters, the dialogues, how it’s filmed etc.
I have seen this before, but that was long ago. Didn’t regret this rewatch at all.
This is a TV series. But ten episodes is like a very long movie really. Anyhow, we’re not going to continue watching this when or if another season comes out.
Overall I liked how this was filmed and edited and the acting was very good, too. And the main topic is interesting as well: racism and its nasty repercussions in the US of the fifties (and earlier).
But mixing this with supernatural elements missed giving the subject the seriousness it deserved.
Some episodes managed very well to portrait all that racism – big and small – the family members are subjected to. But then, the violent scenes were often just over-the-top cruel in my opinion.
In addition I found this had too many plots.
I’m ticking titles off my list of “classic horror movies I’ve never seen”. And again, I understand why this is a classic. Enjoyed this one a lot. Story, filming, editing, acting, special effects and stunts: all superb. And you wouldn’t necessarily notice this is a film shot in the seventies. This must have been way ahead of its time. And that poster is the menacing cherry on top.
Suspenseful and overall well done. Certainly had parallels to Blue Ruin. But the latter was better.
This was a whole lot of fun! Unrealistic, nonsensical, and over-the-top fun. A bit too self-indulgent (for Tarantino), and partly because of that a little bit too long. But overall dialogues, filming and the action were great! That car crash and the final car chase were simply spectacular.
This was ok. It was mainly interesting because of how it was “filmed”: completely through computer UI. And it was suspenseful. But in the end story didn’t make a whole lot of sense.
I think Part 3 was a great movie. The story probably wasn’t as enthralling as in the other two, so I think I agree with most critics it’s the least favourite film of the trilogy. But the whole opera bit at the end, that scream (!), and the end scene were very much worth it.
This was trying too hard being bizarre. It’s tricky to make a bizarre movie. And in this case it didn’t do it for me. I think it also wanted to be funny. I didn’t agree very often (and the jokes sometimes went too far for me). Great cast, though.
Part 2 is on par with part 1, sharing the same minor criticism and major praise. Loved the background story about Vito Corleone’s life and how he became the “original” Godfather.
It’s a little intimidating to write about such a classic. But I agree it’s a great movie. Story, atmosphere, the filming, set design and costumes, acting: all superb. The only negative thing I can say, is that I sometimes found it difficult following the plot, with its many characters and all this macho mafia business.
Overall, though, it’s a classic for a reason!
This also must’ve been one of most explicitly violent movies at the time. And I found it amusing that I didn’t recognise Al Pacino and Robert Duvall at first, because I’m used to their much older faces from much more recent films.
I came to appreciate Jim Jarmusch’s movies in recent years. But this was boring. The “Chardonnay”-scene was the only funny one. Well, and Iggy Pop as Zombie wasn’t too bad. But that was by far not enough to save the film. And it sure had potential with all those terrific actors. No, I’m sorry.
A rewatch. Still very funny. 70 minutes hilariously well spent! And bonus points for being in b/w.
Not a film for claustrophobics! I found this ok. The psychological interplay between the three characters trapped way underground was interesting, although not 100% convincing. The movie also should have better explained why things happened or needed to happen a certain way. As a person unfamiliar with underground tunnel-digging, I was wondering what was going on at times.
Since watching “Everest”, we got into a bit of a mountaineering-movie fever I guess. This one is about the 2008 K2 disaster, featuring interviews and original footage, combined with re-enacted scenes to fill the gaps.
Again, I found this fascinating, simply by the topic itself. However, the movie was a bit confusing concerning where everyone was at what time, or why/when/how people got in trouble – or not. And the occasional non-linear timeline added to the confusion. Plus, the parts about the Italian mountaineer that was part of the first successful K2 summit in the fifties was redundant, in my opinion.
But overall, an interesting film about a K2 expedition gone wrong. But I had to consult Wikipedia afterwards to fully understand what was going on.
I commend the sentiment of this movie. And I agree with it. But to me, there was nothing really new in here, however. And it was a bit dry and too long. The more confrontational interviews of the various groups’ spokespersons were a bit so-so. But the interviews with Raj Patel and Noam Chomsky were pretty interesting.
There was not really much metal in here. It was more about how it is to lose one’s hearing. And that was well done, in my opinion. The story itself was ok, but the different sections of the film weren’t very coherent as a whole.
As usual for Woody Allen, this is a lot about the characters, their relationships, and – of course – the dialogue. Cate Blanchett is absolutely incredible in this. Loved how you got to know about Jasmine’s past piece by piece via the regular flashback scenes. Top!
Movie about the 1996 Mount Everest disaster.
The movie itself is fairly conventional. But that doesn’t mean it’s bad. Far from it! A fascinating story told via a well-made movie made a good Saturday night.
I liked this one! Yes, it’s got fairly typical horror movie elements. But the stage is a Zoom-call during the Corona-lockdown. And I found this pretty well done.
Reminded me of “The Blair Witch Project” (if I remember correctly – because that was looong ago) and “Rec”.
This was a slow movie and more like a psychological and/or social study than about the plot itself.
Relationships, feelings and emotions can be complex and the movie intelligently communicated this. And are so-called grown-ups really that for off in their behaviour from children?
I expected nonsense. But not like this. I didn’t get it.
Although this is not a remake, I think I enjoyed the “original” more.
This rendition certainly had a much better production and much better acting. And it wasn’t bad at all. And I very much enjoyed the Berlin set. But I found the side-plots somewhat irrelevant and the main story confusing. Or maybe it was just too late in the day, yesterday night.
So, it was a good movie, but I wasn’t 100% convinced.
Four school teachers wanted to try a philosopher’s theory that humans generally have 0.05% too little blood alcohol. So they started drinking.
This is funny, has drama, and wonderful acting. Highly recommended!
Nicole “warned” me that critics didn’t like this movie much.
I disagree. I found this to be a clever, funny and overall very entertaining story.
Another classic. For good reason.
Amazing set. Great atmosphere. Well done – and indeed gory – murder scenes. The end scene was great. Very much enjoyed the soundtrack. On the other hand, acting and dialogs were lacking. But that’s alright. I would recommend this, if one is into horror movies and hasn’t seen this, yet.
Good dialogs and good acting. But unsurprising and very conventional. Was ok.
Had its moments and good ideas. But ultimately I found this unconvincing and excessively cruel.
About the history of Polaroid. A lot of great info and anecdotes about instant photography. Nice animations included. An hour and fifteen minutes very well spent!
The true story of British intelligence whistleblower Katharine Gun who—prior to the 2003 Iraq invasion—leaked a top-secret NSA memo exposing a joint US-UK illegal spying operation against members of the UN Security Council. The memo proposed blackmailing member states into voting for war.
– Description on the TMDB page.
A well-made movie about a topic I’m interested in and about a case I wasn’t aware of. Top!
I loved “Parasite” by Bong Joon-ho. This was not as good.
Still very good, though, with interesting (moral) questions raised about disabilities, family bonds, the work of the police, and the blaming of presumed murder suspects.
My only negative point is actually, that is was a bit too long. (And maybe I didn’t get into it as much, because we watched the dubbed German version, which I am no longer used to, and which irritates me.)
How about some mainstream comedy for a change?
This was funny! But not so good that I need to watch it again. But maybe part 2? ;-)
This was ok.
Individual scenes were certainly nicely done. But I often had the feeling that I had seen everything before.
It had too many jump-scares, which drives me nuts.
November had a Friday the 13th. I interpreted this as a sign to watch another horror classic I have never seen before.
Overall it was an ok movie. I’d like to note that the murders in this were indeed pretty brutal – still by today’s standards, I’d say. In this regard it was probably indeed ahead of its time.
I never knew it had Kevin Bacon in it.
This was great! Super funny. But also serious and sad.
Great dialogues, and great characters. There also was often this suspense in many scenes where you wouldn’t know what would happen next.
I found the full uncut version DVD on a flea market recently. I don’t think I have seen this version before. And to be honest, I actually don’t care very much about that sort of thing. I just thought it would be nice to rewatch this again after 20 years or so.
I still appreciate this movie for its original story and style that influenced so many Zombie movies after it. Basically, every season of “The Walking Dead” works like this movie. Minus the humour. And that’s another aspect I like about this film.
But man, this was looong! And the sound was bad. The Zombie-makeup was just comical, too. And it’s sexist.
Anyhow, I still enjoyed watching this classic again. I just wouldn’t recommend to watch this full uncut version.
Not super-logical. Was ok, with a few good scenes. But not really recommended.
I like movies that play in a single room – like a play at a theatre. It’s a pretty morbid play. And pretty clever. Reminded me of Columbo at times. Bonus points for making it look like a one-shot movie. Thumbs up!
A rewatch. First time was in the cinema, where this movie is much more impressive of course. But I liked it a second time on the TV, too.
Convincing story. Amazing futuristic and dystopian world. Probably would watch a third time at some point.
One more horror classic. One more great film!
Reminded me of Alien in a few ways.
Great special effects. Great set. Great story. Great acting.
My second Roy Andersson movie.
He has a unique style. And I think I still need to get used to it. Nevertheless, this was entertaining with it’s dry humor. I probably didn’t fully “get” this film, though.
Another classic – from 1968! – I’ve never seen before. It’s deservedly highly respected! This must have inspired so many horror-movies after it. I can’t recall an earlier (horror) movie with that “secret backdoor” element, the “nosy neighbour cliché”, the “is the protagonist going crazy or is she right?”-storyline, or that “look through the door spy”-shot. And there are probably even more firsts in there.
Hail chocolate mouse! Hail Satan! Hail Rosemary’s Baby!
A first date takes a fateful turn when a racist cop stops the two for a minor traffic violation. The cop ends up dead. They flee, and a days-long chase through the US ensues.
This film is very much fitting regarding the current #blacklivesmatter movement. It showcases on a few occasions how black people feel about the police; and how one might react when the police is rather considered an enemy than a friend.
It’s also a film about loneliness, companionship, trust and love.
Thumbs up!
An absurd film. And pretty funny. Music and sounds are ace. I liked the visuals, too, because the rendition of the used lens(es) looked pretty “classic” to me – and I like “classic”. Apparently the writer/director Quentin Dupieux has some sort of cult status. I didn’t know him until this.
More nostalgia than anything else. Was ok. Wouldn’t watch again.
Given that Nicole is a huge David Lynch fan, it’s surprising I haven’t watched this in full until recently. And I thoroughly enjoyed it. Great Lynch-y-en atmosphere and strangeness. Would watch again.
Well-written and filmed Cluedo/whodunnit-type movie. With star-cast. Awesome!
I seem to really enjoy Jim Jarmusch’s movies. This was no exception. It’s an episode film about Taxi drivers in various famous cities in the same night at the same time. Not all episodes were equally good, but overall a very entertaining endeavour. Armin Mueller-Stahl in the New York episode is hilarious!
Now-hobo takes revenge for the killing of his parents, after the killer has been released from prison. He’s a complete amateur – yet very bad-ass – and gets into a fight with the killer’s whole family. Suspenseful. Thumbs up!
Remarkable movie that manages to be very funny while also addressing several very serious topics such as rape, murder, suicide and racism – and still dealing with them in a serious way. Top!
Said “man” faked his death and now terrorises his (ex-)wife. Not really bad. But not really good, either. It’s probably a little better than I thought it would be. Still: not really recommended.
