Richard Dobson's CHORDER has a very nice scheme for representing arbitrary channel mappings as a series of lowercase letters and zeros. I'm using tuples in pippi scripts, but don't have a nice way to express it compactly in messages - I like this approach a lot. CHORDER :...

Today I'm going to try to fix the amplifer module in the contraption. There are two stereo amplifier boards stacked on standoffs behind the module panel. They are each connected to a gain pot, an audio breakout and the lead to the power supply. The bottom board produces...

I just started reading W. Ross Ashby's An Introduction to Cybernetics last month. I'm amazed to find that the operand, operator, transform and transformation concepts introduced right away in the book seem to encompass functional programming, relational database design and other fundamental concepts embedded deep into programming languages and systems, including machine learning.

I guess it makes sense! My understanding is that information theory and cybernetics drove a lot of early applied theory in computing, but I'm curious to learn more...

I think this is my first blog post about blog posting?

Blog posts (well, going forward, I'll probably merge all the old stuff like please download me etc, together here later too) have their very own page now too! I'll keep this log page, but posts now also have permalinks, like this:

/blog/2026/3/28/

..is the link to today's post. I've already built a one-post-per-day throttle into this blog with the day-resolution permalinks, which ends up meaning I tend to edit and continuously publish the post (if I'm posting at all) throughout the day to the web, and then publish the RSS the next day, or when I don't care to edit anymore!

Animism came to mind this morning, and I started thinking about something I wrote a while ago about locating agency in process based music. The question where do you place agency in process based music? ended up being mostly rhetorical. Diffusing the question by articulating real systems and situations placed in a perceptual context felt like a more naturally interesting project to me than trying to locate agency in any sense, really.

This morning I'm reframing that insinct to try to dismantle the question as a aspiration to the universality of agency, and asking myself: do I extend this instinct to software, too?

My language is harsher with software -- any anthropomorphising is disclaimered with a "so-called" or a follow-up explicit thinging of some sort.

I pick up a rock and I say "look at this little guy" not "look at this little so-called guy".

One: You make specialty chairs, but in your office you might not design a line of specialty chairs just for office use. Instead you might go to the office store and get something cheap off the shelf that you know will be fine. You make chairs so you often know which ones to avoid, and the types of problems you might have with them. These chairs don't need to be customized, something off the shelf built to certain typical standards is completely fine. Two: You run a newspaper and your office needs chairs. You go to the office supply store and you get some chairs. After a while, they have some problems and you try a different kind of chair which ends up being just fine. Three: You work in a special cleanroom environment doing sensitive work on irreplaceable artifacts. You go to the office store and buy some chairs for your cleanroom. The chairs have a defect that causes an accident that ruins a collection of irreplaceable literature. Four: You are a surgeon, you get some office chairs at the store for your surgery room. During surgery one collapses sending someone nearby lurching and causes the surgeon to slip, killing the patient. Contrived! This is how we should be thinking about LLMs though.

Seems like there's something wrong with one of the amplifier modules in the contraption! This explains a lot, two channels are really quiet for some reason. I think maybe a bad solder job by yours truly on the gain pot? I'll have to take it apart to see, and I'm considering ...
