i've been collecting some humbling and inspirational feedback from you guys over the past few weeks, thank you! so, rather than work on any of my other projects, i've created yet another random and experimental page to celebrate your kind words... flip over to the back cover!

neocities went down for several hours yesterday. all the details are discussed on the subreddit, but tl;dr: namecheap mistakenly disabled the entire neocities.org domain.

i have a backup of my files, so i could have relaunched or mirrored the site on a different hosting provider (like nekoweb), should i need to. but i don't really want to leave neocities, so i decided to wait for the problem to be fixed (which it is now).

so what i actually did during the outage is created a nekoweb account and built myself a second web site, a home-away-from-home: Shen in Orbit!

created a little javascript util to convert a Date object into a nice readable string like "3 hours ago" or "6 weeks ago", etc.

(well actually ive dug out a bit of my php code from an ancient project and rewritten it in js)

catching up with some admin. fixed a few minor html errors on the home page. i'm valid, baby! (well, one page is for now anyway.) new neo-neighbours added: all my friends are stories • frostecho • lazy bones • myrtletribe • scripted resources • sewceress • starbug • swifty...

well, ive fallen down another (very deep and very fascinating) rabbit hole today... i've discovered 100 Questions for Webmasters by MOUSEcky (via Starbug)

reading through the questions has brought up plenty of issues and memories, so its going to take me a while to answer it all properly... here's my page (I've done about 15 questions so far). this is very, very WORK IN PROGRESS, so if i seem to go quiet, it's probably because im thinking about this....

so i've finally been approved for joined some web rings: html energy, no ai, and rewild the web.

the wikipedia describes web rings as a relic of the old web, which makes me feel.... well, let's just say this isn't the first time i've joined a web ring.

anyway, i guess i have, like, 3x2=6 new neighbours, hello! (do they have comfortable chairs in here?)

added a short (ok, it grew a bit longer than intended) technical note about my recent, emotional reunion with rss.

(i might do a few more of these quasi-technical essays notes in the future. it helps me think.)

woah, i must have forgotten rss even existed! seems like the ideal way to keep track of stuff on this decentralised indie web thingy. so, (with a little help from my friends) ive created my own rss feed to share updates about the site: here it is!. (more notes about rss coming soon...)

created a guest book using atabook.

neocities seems a bit broken today :( it's ok now.

created Sharky & George shrine (wip). uploaded wristcam archive. customised 404 page. moved dog+house to new page (trying to declutter the homepage by making more pages.) added ascii banners. added some new banners to pokémon page. changed link maker to show link to neocites profile. add(ed/ing) more neighbours and bookmarks. i'm now trying to tidy up the homepage and some of the main section pages (wip).

ive made loads of updates around here in the past few days: rejigged the home page (then rejigged the homepage, then rejigged the home page again). tidied up CSS and simplified a lot of code, which i'll most likely rip apart again next time im editing ready for the next phase. added jump menus in various places. updated sitemap. moved bookmarks to their own page.

hung a few old cats & doodles in the art gallery (which was also a fun little exercise using css flexbox) • Dad Jokes🤣 new! • gowibble.js • tiny dice • the doghouse • HTML CRIB SHEET (added link maker) • Pokémon catch card gallery •jQuery blocks game
