[Note] Fuck/off [RSS Exclusive!]

Embarrassingly, it took until 2018 before Three Rings implemented pronouns in a way I could be proud of (and it's only improved since then!). But it still gives me a smug satisfaction, every time I see some hateful shit mock respectful pronoun use, to think how my software would respond to them.

[Article] Google Shared My Phone Number!

When people started calling my personal mobile number with questions about a voluntary organisation I'm involved with, I was confused: we weren't sharing that number. It turns out that Google had decided to take the number I used to verify my identity for Google Business some years prior and start putting it in Google Search results. WTF, Google?

[Note] Philadelphia

Shower thought for the morning was: why is cream cheese spread 'Philadelphia' called that? Is it from Philadelphia? (My box isn't, of course: it came from Ireland.) Nope, it turns out that it was originally invented in New York in the 19th century and named for Philadelphia because Philadelphia, PA was at that point famous for its dairy industry. Just another bit of parasitic branding leveraging a borrowed association, like the Quaker Oats guy or the Rolls Razor. Now I'm wondering how many other examples I can find!

[Note] Queer Coded 🌈

Paraphrased from a conversation in a Manchester pub last night - Them: Your [dyed blue] hair is queer-coded, right? Like... you're telegraphing you're queer? Me: I mean... I'm also wearing a pride rainbow t-shirt and my watch strap is a 'bi pride' flag. I don't feel like I'm being subtle. Them: Nah. The hair's the giveaway.

[Checkin] Dan Q did not find GCAF1WK KT 132 – Just a number 1

[Checkin] Dan Q found GC2MTTV Power to the People

This checkin to GC2MTTV Power to the People reflects a geocaching.com log entry. See more of Dan's cache logs. Not too busy here this morning so I was able to mount a proper search for the cache. No sign of the container, so providing a photo log in accordance with CO’s instructions. TFTC. My GPSr […]

[Checkin] Dan Q found GC84F1A Manchester Central Library

What a truly spectacular cache. FP awarded, without hesitation. I've seen a similar kind in a library before but never with such depth, such a story, so voluminous a container, nor - let's be honest - so beautiful a building!

With an hour and a bit before my train departs I figured I'd hit up a few caches before leaving Manchester this morning. This was the first.

[Checkin] Dan Q found GC5C8N2 Church Micro 6331…Manchester – St Ann’s

I'm in Manchester for the day for a social gathering related to a variety of the volunteering activities I've been involved with over the last, OMG-I'm-so-old, 26 years or so. After my train arrived I meandered via OK04B5 (nice to see the OC community alive and well here in Manchester!) to find myself some lunch, then dropped by this cache on my way to our event venue.

[Checkin] Dan Q found OK04B5 The Beacon of Hope

I'm in Manchester for a volunteering-adjacent social event and, not often seeing OpenCaches pop up on my radar, visited this spot on my way from the station to the venue. So beautiful to see Manchester acknowledge its part in queer history, and a beautiful memorial to everybody who has died as a result of the AIDS pandemic. TFTC!

[Note] Three Rings ❤️ NLA

Oxford Station. Catching a train to Manchester for a get-together in memory of the Nightline Association, which will sadly be closing this year (although individual Nightlines will doubtless soldier on just as they did before the Association). Carrying a big ol’ bag of Three Rings swag to give to basically anybody who expresses even the […]

[Note] Portal 3kend

Never underestimate the power of people who are motivated by the good they can do in the world. Today I was in awe of this team of unpaid volunteers who, having already given up their bank holiday weekend, worked through dinner and into the night to ensure the continued uptime of a piece software that enables the listening service of emotional support and suicide helplines.

[Checkin] Dan Q found GCA2025 Where’s 25? – Locationless Cache

Happy 25th birthday, geocaching. I'm spending the weekend volunteering for a nonprofit I founded (it's almost as old as geocaching, at 23). We're staying in a hotel at N 52° 36.184' W 001° 53.869'. I've also gotten out to find a couple of local geocaches.

[Checkin] Dan Q found GC9QD6R Centurion

Woke early, as usual, for the first day of a weekend of volunteering, while staying at nearby Fairlawns. I've already tapped out the most-local caches to that hotel on previous stays, so for this morning's walk I came further afield to find this (and one of the two puzzle caches not too far away; that's next, hopefully!)

[Article] Variable-aspect adaptive-bitrate video… in vanilla HTML?

Thanks to recent browser enhancements, it's possible to show videos of different aspect ratios based on CSS media queries with no JavaScript dependencies. You can even combine it with adaptive bitrate streaming, even on static hosting. Let me show you how.

[Note] Trans former judge plans to challenge gender ruling at European court

"Trans former judge plans to challenge gender ruling at European court": https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c9qw2149yelo Representation matters. That we HAVE a trans former-judge, somebody both well-equipped AND motivated to escalate this important challenge to the ECHR, is hugely fortunate. We need more representation (of trans people specifically, but many other groups too, and perhaps particularly in the intersections) in positions of power, expertise, and authority. To defend the human rights of all of us. Wishing you luck, Victoria McCloud.
