Film Labs Need More Than Good Films

Film Lab Africa taking its creative-industry programme to Kano is the useful part of this story. Not because Lagos has too many filmmakers, but because Nigeria’s screen economy is still too concentrated in a few cities and venues.

The anthology model is promising: Daniel Oriahi’s first short is complete, while Biodun Stephen’s is in production. But the real test comes after the workshops. Who funds equipment access, rehearsal spaces, editing rooms, distribution, and maintenance outside the usual centres?

A creative programme should leave infrastructure behind, not only a finished film. The Guardian reports on the Kano industry session.
