Just wondering, has anyone managed to use Birdnet-Pi with the Pi in USB gadget mode? This would make it possible to change the details for the wifi connection when travelling, which is currently extremely difficult, if not impossible, without being able to access all the config options. Wanted advice before I try it. Would it work?

I guess we are having some kind of brownout here in #Rome. Electronics, like an oscillating fan and the laptop charger, are fluctuating on an off, presumably with voltage drops.
Just finished tomorrow's Eat This Newsletter: ube, menus, brambles, slop, not slop and not good either, and beef.

Nothing I like better than to be woken from a deep nap by the very loud clatter of hailstones on the terrace. A blessed relief.
There is a strand of thought out there that believes any and all legislation to do with seeds is evil and unnecesary. It is wrong. Here’s why.

Where do I cast my vote for you?
Another welcome surprise from a feed that had long lain dormant, rather like Rebsie's seeds

No finer way to spend a sweltering 36C Sunday morning than in the cool of a cinema watching the gorgeous restoration of Charlie Chaplin’s Modern Times. So that’s what we did.
That is a bright orange canna with a blue spruce behind. These are two and three.

My big remaining problem with reclaiming my bought and paid for music is having to use Audio Hijack to record songs bought from iTunes pre 2007 to free them from the DRM so they can be played by #Navidrome
And it is a right pain.
Just wonderful. Dunstan Orchard’s reel to reel tape machine. I wish the larger project he mentioned had launched.
It was fun to be taken down memory lane twice, in a way, by this thing I published 20 years ago today and to realise that my feelings about the whole fandango have not changed one bit. I still like tinkering. I still barely know what I’m doing. I still get something approaching what I set out to do.
We have a lot of cannas on the terrace and I think this one, fresh this morning, is my favourite. Snagged from a resort in Puglia, I call it Badisco. No idea of the correct variety name. #bloomscrolling
New episode: The Tomato in England
The first tomato plants in England were noted around 1590, but there aren’t many recipes until the 1720s. Why did it take so long?
The stories you may have heard are probably wrong.
Dr Serin Quinn explains what really caused the delay.
Reports of “brown marks” reading 8647 on the grass of the National Mall reminded me of a far superior prank. Wags used fertiliser to inscribe ☮ on the hallowed lawn of an Oxbridge college in the early 1970s. Much smarter, because weedkiller is easily dug up and resown, fertiliser, not so much
Wrote up yesterday’s bicycle ride, which was fun and uneventful, although I am still on the hunt for an iOS turn-by-turn navigation system that actually prioritises being on a bicycle.
Going through some old photographs and came across this gem from 2018, when I was still bemused by Apple’s Aperture.

There’s a whiff of nostalgia around Eat This Newsletter 304
Small tractors, small farms, small grain, small fibs, and small customs that meant a great deal.

In the US, Congress has the chance to pass the Universal School Meals Program Act and the Scratch Cooked Meals for Students Act, both of which would be a great investment in the future of the country.

In this week's episode, I learned about research in Sweden to improve the sustainability of schoool meals, which are already available to all children, without exception.
Ford Denison's post Fighting Trump’s War on Science makes a strong case that he cannot make a strong case for his research without using the word "evolution" which puts it in danger of a personal, ignorant veto.

Happy World Bicycle Day.
I wrote a thing about how hard it is for a tinkerer sysadmin to learn how to do things.
If you have answers, I am all ears.

Every picture tells a story, eh?
Guerilla gardening.
I tried this when we first got here, and the forces of evil wiped it out pretty quickly. Maybe times have changed. Maybe this time beauty will prevail.
New episode: More Sustainable School Meals
Researchers in Sweden optimised school lunches (universally free) to reduce GHG emissions while staying essentially the same. Negative result very positive; no changes in amount eaten, amount wasted and meal satisfaction.
"Most [pupils] hadn’t noticed the shift. Some of them actually noticed that the food was tastier. And some of them noticed that there was more vegetarian food."
Alas, a total bust. After 35 minutes of hanging around, one more person arrived and I bailed. Such a disappointment. Shan’t bother again. #criticalmass #roma #bicycle
