I make software to interop. Working on a new web designed for writers and readers and in place of HTML we use Markdown. Keep it super simple. The big undo.

One thing's for sure -- the web that was controlled by VCs has run out of things to make billions on. Now the question is do we want a web that works for writers and readers. Are we ready for the Big Undo??

Looks nice. Summary of blog post: "A Hacker News like service where the site doesn’t own anything. Every link, upvote, and comment lives in the user’s own account on the Bluesky network, not in her database."

I made John Palfrey get a blog. :-)

I know him from Berkman in the 00s where we made some great mischief together resulting in podcasting and other cool stuff.

And as it was in the 00s, having a blog now is a place of power.

Obama is doing the Old Obama campaign speech and it's something to see. He's got a few gray hairs, but he's still got the energy and chutzpah. I'd love to see him and Bernie Sanders on the same stage before this campaign is over.

We need a new fresh start for the web, and at the same time for a new democracy. It seems one has a lot to do with the other.

This is why we need to reboot the original web, as opposed to the VC ersatz version of the web.

Expect an avalanche of new software because the dam has broken, one person who knows what they want, and understands UI design can make a big complex app in 2-3 months. Over a weekend you can snap together an app from common UI concepts. Think of making software the same way you play with LEGOs.

Imagine rock and roll without the Beatles.

Imagine the web without the first 15 years of the web.

Thank you Google! 😡

There’s a difference between a site you can visit in Chrome and a site that’s part of the web.

I like the web for people, sites that live and grow, like people.

100 years from now you should feel the people who lived there.

Things are moving really quickly now.

We don’t have drone warfare in the US yet probably because our enemies don’t want to wake us up before our country is too poor to put a stop to it.

Before long we’ll have Ukraine style drones raining down on American cities. Meanwhile we have built a military designed to fight WWII. We’d better hope Ukraine wins their war with Russia, and they’re still our friend.

Yesterday I wrote a piece about a Markdown-only browser, that worked nicely with HTTP.

I got interested in what it would take to do this, and asked ChatGPT for a plan.

If you want to implement it, please do.

Let me know if you have something to try.

The tech industry kicked the web out of the web.

scripting.com is your canary in a coal mine.

If you can read it then your browser is a real web browser.

If it can’t it’s phoney baloney.

It's been a long time since I've seen a big tech company use developers well to do what only developers can do.

And it's very rare. Most big tech companies resent developers, but find their stories help build interest.

Net-net they try to crush developers, and usually that works.
