If “Screen Unknown Senders” stops working for Messages in iOS26

This happened to me on my iPhone SE 3 running iOS 26, and I found a simple fix at https://www.reddit.com/r/iphone/comments/1nlbq4r/comment/nlqahws/: turn off "Screen Unknown Senders",…

The Week’s Links 01

This is an experiment. At an online Homebrew Website Club on Wednesday talk turned to week notes, the ones we liked, why we liked them, and so on. Some are mostly personal reflections, others are mostly links, and naturally some are a mixture of both. The ones I like tend to...

quxnet.net

I’ve been invited to quxnet.net, a private network that looks and works like the forums and message boards of the early web. Its sysop on the about page: “The old internet was for farmers. The new internet is for cattle.”

No feed deciding what I see, just boards, threads and people who chose to be there. It’s thoughtfully made and developed surprisingly far, and I share its values: real people, real connection.

What makes me hesitate is the same thing I keep writing about. I tell people to own their corner of the web instead of renting space on someone else’s platform. quxnet is a much kinder landlord than most, but it’s still a landlord. If it closes, so does everything I’ve written there.

So I’ll give it a fair try. Anything I write there that’s worth keeping, I’ll publish here as well.

Nature

Pink flowers, flame red trees. Yellows and greens. Layers of colour, worthy of being a Fresco (or is Nature so beautiful that a Fresco would limit its expression?). Autumn is especially pretty today. Colour around every corner. A faint cold chill caresses my hands. The colours of the trees warm me up.

I am enjoying the music and the birdsong and the colours. What makes Nature beautiful is not an individual leaf or tree but the collective of all, and the forces that bind all together. We are in constant dialogue with Nature — we weave past and through and with its forces. It’s nice to hear the voices of people — the joy of talking while waiting; of the presence of others.

Some things that bring me joy

Writing stories. Sharing things that make me smile. Reading knowledge people have shared openly. Communities that organise knowledge. Project Gutenberg. New music by my favourite artists. Acoustic songs. The spark of “I should learn this on the piano!”. All the people who make events happen. (related) Attending events where I learn something new. Seeing people’s curiosity shine through. Learning about art. Having my mind opened by art. Discovering a new personal website that someone has lovingly crafted. Bookshops. Talking with friends. Dreaming. Sitting with a new idea.

Food Questions Challenge

There is maybe a fun blogging challenge in writing about our favourite snacks from where we live... After a discussion with Joel and Zachary, I started writing a few questions about food to which I’d love to hear others’ answers. This is in the same vein as the “Bear Blog Q...

More & More & More & More Acid

Again, for the fourth time, I got to appear on stage and shout More Acid at a crowd of people. This time it was in London at the Dublin Castle: The Dublin Castle is a pub and live music venue in Camden Town, London. It gained prominence as a venue in the late 1970s after th...

Catch a Bird (or, Happiness)

What made you happy today? asks Catch a Bird. I love this question, and the website. For the last five minutes or so, I have been both answering the aforementioned question, and trying my best to make some people smile. Here are a selection of my answers to the question:
Trying 100% dark chocolate for the first time. Playing the guitar. Singing my heart out. The joy of autumn. Have a wonderful day :) Taylor Swift! Seeing two cats while wandering the neighbourhood. You’re an amazing human :)
I love technology that can highlight the best of us; technology that brings us together.

To you, dear reader, I hope you have a wonderful day.

Ground

Rain may exist, but so too do clear skies, and the possibility for something to start serendipitously, like a raindrop falling from a sky once dry or a wave from a friend you never expected to see. (In Romantics, VI) I wave with words. I weave and paint with words -- with p...

Meaning

What does the concrete path mean to me? In the mirrored ground I see many meanings. Here is a place I have stopped to think. Here is a place over which I have idly walked on my way to somewhere familiar or somewhere new. Here is a vein of the city, made by all those who wal...
