8-Bit Day 2026

Yesterday – September 13th – was the 256th day of the year. Tantek blogged about this in 2024 and in 2025 introduced a challenge to make a web page in under 256 bytes. After reading his announcement from yesterday his morning, I decided I would participate again. Last year ...

The coffee

This year I have been drinking more tea than coffee. I have around three or four coffees a week, usually all decaf, and I don’t visit speciality coffee shops as much as I once did (in large part because I am never sure whether there will be decaf available). I think the last...

Autumn

The joy of the cool morning air and the seeing singing birds fly between trees. There is a light haze in the air this morning, the haze of an autumn morning. My cheeks are chilly right now — probably pink too. Light shines through the windows and casts a long glow on the flo...

🎬 Melancholia

Movie poster for “Melancholia”.

When melancholia hits you hart, you’re done.

Absolutely love the depressing atmosphere in this movie. And what a scenario with another planet hitting earth!

Love the classic soundtrack. The space images are fantastic. The opening slo-mo sequences remind me of Crewdson photographs.

Part one might be a bit too long, but part two is absolutely perfect.

👍 Recommended!

Of Day

Herein, vignettes of today. Silver-tipped trees, reddening leaves hanging over fences. Trees swishing like bristles of a brush, painting the day, or waving away the clouds. Morning — listening to music that makes me happy. ⁂ ⁂ ⁂ Two hearts drawn on a wall on the corner. I...

My whole Mac kept freezing during test runs. Menus, graphs, even switching Spaces.

Turned out pytest-xdist renames its worker processes before and after every test, and macOS did not cope well with that. Since I switched it off, the freezes haven't come back.

How I tracked it down: https://wersdoerfer.de/blogs/ephes_blog/pytest-macos-desktop-freezes/

My home page is a poem. I designed it in this way to explore the extent to which a literary medium – a poem – could be used for navigation, for way finding. Poems help me see the world differently, to navigate thoughts. So too does navigation: every link is a bridge to a new...
