A moment

Yellowing leaves blow over the path in front of me, making a sound as they move. Every leaf, a colourful reminder of the coming autumn. Looking up and around and straight ahead, I felt the fresh breeze blow against my face and my hair. The sunlit grass gleamed. Further ahead, the canopy of trees rustled with the wind. With every sound and colour and feeling, I feel alive.

Blaugust 2026 in review

I am sitting with a cup of tea by my side as I have been on many mornings this month. This morning, instead of being precariously balanced on the arm of the chair, the cup rests between the right arm of the chair and my right leg, keeping me warm in a way where the temperatu...

Early Autumn

I look out to the trees around and I see a sea of green. The air was warm today; summer is still here. With that said, there are ever more signs that indicate the beginning of the forthcoming season. Every so often, I notice a tree whose leaves are yellowing. This morning, I...

Old Picture of the Boat-Bridge at Sano, Kozuke Province by Hokusai

Thamara and I are doing an art exchange where we each sent the other person an art-related object to analyse. Thamara sent me a copy of “Beneath the Great Wave: Hokusai & Hiroshige”, a book from the art exhibition of the same name being held at the Whitworth in Mancheste...

Flow

Natural light bathed the Royal Mile on the warm, summer’s morning. The Fringe is close to being finished, but there are still a few days of shows left. I was standing amid a city wakening up: where, hours later, there would be music and singing and crowds. I gave my day to ...

Don’t let RSS rob you

For a “dead” technology, RSS is currently stirring up a veritable storm in a teacup. Antonio thinks Your RSS Reader Is Robbing You, because it doesn’t let you experience the effort someone put into styling their site just so. It robs you of the personality behind the words. ...

The holiday

Emily: Alice, Dave, remember not to book any meetings on the 21st. It’s a bank holiday. Dave: I thought it was the 31st? Emily: We have one on the 31st too. Dave: Another one? Alice: What’s the one on the 21st for? Emily: It says here, ”May Bank Holiday”. Alice: One day we’ll...

A4

“You injured yourself again? What was it this time?”
“I have taken up type-writing. Unfortunately there are holes between the keys.”
“Did your finger get stuck?”
“I wish. I dropped a quarter of a digestive biscuit into the keyboard while I was writing a letter to my friend. I decided to use this as an opportunity to learn typewriter maintenance.”
“Ouch. You scratched yourself with a screwdriver then?”
“No, you’re looking at an A4 injury.”
“What’s that? A category? Sounds minor?”
“Let’s just say instruction manuals are their own hazards.”

The joy of

herein, a few moments of joy from recent days.

The joy of:
Realising I have a phrase to use in a piece of writing that I need to write down.Jotting down an idea on the closest surface.Hearing a new mashup from my favourite singer for the first time.Exploring a book with pictures. I really felt like I was exploring.Noticing how much reading about an artwork helps me understand it.Working on pieces of writing with others.Arranging mementos into my new letter rack, and trying my best to stack my museum maps into layers so I can see as many as possible.Starting a new scrapbook, and placing the first stickers in – of making the book my own.Autumn rains, and how water nourishes the ground.Trying to learn a new song on the guitar.Tidying up.Seeing someone smile.Someone smiling back.Friendship.
