Everything Has Unintended Consequences

By pure chance, I found myself witness to the most delightful of unexpected scenarios: a fascinating conversation about a topic I knew almost nothing about.

All I have to do in these ...

Penge West This is the second festival in July that we’ve had to get the Overground to Penge West rather than Crystal Palace Station because there are more trains to Penge West than Crystal Palace. This meant that we had a 20 minute walk to the festival entrance, which is no...

Countryside; Blaugust

With the window open and the breeze flowing through, I hear the calls and songs of birds. A calling pigeon in particular stands out. I love the calls of pigeons in the evening. The sound reminds me of childhood, looking out the window, onto Nature. A flock of birds fly by as...

A Dating Matter: Hugo, Indiekit, and Node

How an issue with dates in Hugo triggered me to go on a learning journey with Indiekit and Node.js, and ended up creating my first npm package Indiekit plugin. While writing this troubleshooting log, I ended up creating a new Hugo feature: a shortcode that fetches OG images from external links!

🎬 Total Recall

Movie poster for “Total Recall”.

The sets, the clothes, the makeup, the props - it’s all a little goofy and overdone. And I think this fits the film perfectly. Because it’s not taking itself too seriously. It’s a great Akschn Fuim and simply entertaining from start to finish in all its 80s glory. No shit!

An Elaborate Excuse

This is my entry for July’s IndieWeb Carnival. True to form, it was written right at the eleventh hour (dictated, in this case.) I’m trying something new: drafting while I go on my morning walk.

Lousy Hotel Avoided

Last summer, I noticed an insect bringing a bit of leaf to plug the hole in a bit of bamboo that is part of one of those folding director’s chairs. Huh? A leafcutter bee, how interesting, and thought no more about it. I particularly failed to notice when, or indeed whether, ...

Of Day

I hear the birds singing as I sit by the window and look out on the horizon. I like looking at all the colours of the sky in the moments after sunset, when ambers recede and the sky becomes ever more blue before night time. I hear the sound of my fingers typing on my keyboar...

Lattes

I watched the movie "Valentines Day" (2010) for the first time today, which stars, among others, Taylor Swift. The energy in this scene (especially the enthusiastic and excited way in which the words are said, while Taylor carries a huge bear) 1 fills me with joy:
[call out: "Save the Lattes!"]
Taylor: They're putting lattes in the vending machines? Finally!
Taylor: Robbie, I am so glad you are taking care of this.
Robbie: You got it.
Taylor: And, I like caramel lattes, just FYI.
I am not a fan of caramel lattes, but I do love this scene!

🎬 Sunshine

Movie poster for “Sunshine”.

This was fantastic. It has a great crew with its space-movie typical in-fights and betrayal, stunning imagery, gripping action; and absolutely fucking golden space suits. I wish I could watch this in a cinema at some point again.

the writer’s mind

making notes and reviewing quotes,
collected from day and night:
here, there are stories.

i revel in observing, and
in place-
making.
where am i? how do i feel?
what does this mean to me?

i think of the melody of words
their cadence and shape and tense
and from all, i feel:.
from words, wonder;
with words, wonder.

I just finished War and Peace, here are some thoughts

On my 22nd birthday, two years ago, I had a pretty pleasant day. I don't really remember what about it was good, I probably had an enjoyable task at work and a good time with collegues; and in my good mood, I also went down to the book shop right outside my workplace and picked up War and Peace. The cashier made a little comment as he scanned the book, apparently impressed or surprised.

Why'd I pick it up? Well, why would anyone want to read the book? Because it's a classic and everyone says it's good. Was it? Yes! But not in the sort of way I expected it to be.
