📖 The Seventh Function of Language ✍

In the End was the Word I was so taken with Civilisations that I’ve been waiting for an opportunity to indulge in an earlier novel by Laurent Binet. Doing it this way round made a lot of sense, because I do not think I would have persevered if I had not already had a taste o...

How I find links

This is my (late) contribution to the January 2026 Grizzly Gazette Carnival on the topic “How I ___”, where contributors are invited to fill in the blank. I saw the Carnival a few days ago and, after some thinking, the idea “How I find links” came to mind. Whenever I am on ...

Flowers; snow

There were only one or two other patrons seated with a warm drink on this cool morning. For the first time in a few weeks, I got my favourite table. I’m not sure why it is my favourite, but it is the one I gravitated toward when the place opened. When I looked out the wind...

Stanmer Park

Today we decided to escape London and go for a walk in the out doors. We parked the car by the One Garden, before heading out into the park we went to toilets. On the way to the toilet we passed a food van called Tallow Street Food. We both had a Korean Pork Belly bun, it wa...

🎬 The Revenant

letterboxd.com/danielpietzsch/film/the-revenant-2015/

Movie poster for “The Revenant”.

Saw this for its 10th anniversary at the Metropol. What a treat! Thoroughly enjoyed this one, letting me absorb into its story, atmosphere and grandiose landscapes. It’s like you’re right there with the protagonists (as far as you can from the comfort of one’s cinema seat). There are so many intense scenes and they’re so masterfully captured and choreographed. Leo and Tommy Hardy are so good (but I was very thankful for subtitles, because I would’ve otherwise been lost with the latter’s accent and mumbling). A must-see!

👍 Recommended!

A distant view of a group of people in a circle doing exercises with a bamboo staff beneath some tall, almost bare trees. The sky above is blue and cloudy and in the distance can be glimpsed the top of a white building behind a line of trees.

Saturday morning reading

My warm breath steams up my glasses a little bit. I have my cold pillow resting on my chin. I’m still under the covers. I started my morning with a book, Hot Chocolate on Thursday, a cosy tale that took me to Japan and Sydney all without my leaving my bedroom. I love reading...

🎬 Frankie Freako

Movie poster for “Frankie Freako”.

After the very positive surprise of Psycho Goreman, this is the second movie from the same director. Unfortunately, this is not even close to the quality of PG. The humour is lame and just silly (well, yes, some things were indeed pretty funny, but that was an exception), the characters are not as likeable and the puppets are not that great either. I’d rather watch PG again!

Hello Again, World

Hooded crows are common round here and very entertaining. I took to offering them bits of old cheese, apple cores and the like, eventually settling on peanuts in their shell because they are inexpensive and handy. If the birds are hanging around, they come as soon as they se...
