Questions

Ever since I published “Blogs, websites, and identity”, I have been thinking about and discussing some of the questions I raised in the blog post: why do we take photos, what does it mean to write on the web. The essay feels like a starting point: a framing from which to work...

Eclipse

Is it possible to be in awe and have no idea to what extent until you look back? I think this is what I feel now, looking back on the solar eclipse that happened an hour and a half ago or so. “Isn’t it amazing that this happens?”, I said to everyone who joined this evening’s...

Impressions; museums

On my desk there is a painting of Monet’s “Bridge over a Pond of Water Lilies” 1 that I purchased when I was on holiday last year. I wanted to bring something back that I could put in my living space, something that would both be a memory of the trip but also a work of art in...

Perspectives

“What would this painting by Titian have looked like four hundred years ago?” I always find myself asking myself new questions – and noticing details I have never appreciated before – when I visit galleries. Some of this comes with my studies. I saw a portrait in the entrance...

Music; electricity

As I approached the top of one of the many long staircases from Cockburn Street to the Royal Mile, I felt an electricity in the air. The street was full; shows happening everywhere as part of the Edinburgh Fringe festival. People were handing out fliers to fill crowds. I alwa...

🎬 Father Mother Sister Brother

A lovely film about the relationships between parents and their kids, and some of the different ways this can go. It’s really not happening much. But I don’t know; Jarmusch always entertains me. And having three movies in one is fantastic: you can just spot all those little details and similarities among them without “having” to watch another one of his films. So, mix all the Jarmusch ingredients, multiply by three, serve them on a single plate, and Bob’s your uncle!

I sure have watched this back in the day. But I couldn’t remember much. And I certainly did not see the uncut version. Anyhow, this was suspenseful and sexy and psycho with a great story. Reminded me quite a bit of Hitchcock. And it has just the right amount humour. Loved all the car chases. And Sharon Stone’s character and acting is just perfect.

🎬 Mission: Impossible

So, I finally got to see that famous vault scene where Tom Cruise hovers over the ground. And that scene was indeed very cool. But overall, I found this to be a little boring. Maybe because I found the premise to be quite low-stakes, especially in relation to how many people of their internal force are sacrificed. And the end action sequence is ridiculous.
