HTML Day 2026

A tale of HTML Day 2026 in three chapters: of poetry, of play, and of reflection. ⁂ ⁂ ⁂ the calm that comes from writing a web page in a quiet room, the loudest sounds being the wind blowing and the sound of keys typing, and of being on a call with friends and people from a...

Auld Faithful

A few weeks ago, the phrase "old faithful" came to me. I thought "that would be a good name for a ship!" This evening, I decided to do something with the name. I had an idea for a direction, but the story went in a completely different direction than I thought. I ended up wri...

The sound of writing

Writing is a sample of the sonorous inner monologue of life: a handful of the words that seem to mean something; that carry with them weight: greeting, friendship, questions, realisations, hopes, dreams, anxieties; sounds that carry life, and how we use language to coalesce a...

How can creative practitioners publish on the web today? Options, pitfalls, and trade-offs

I just published a long essay on a question that nagged me for years. I always felt that more creatives should run their own self-hosted websites — but I was never sure I was right. So I examined every option as objectively as I could, with its real advantages and pitfalls, so readers can reach their own conclusions!

Weird incident yesterday with self-proclaimed “AIs” joining an IndieWeb Homebrew Website Club meetup. They awkwardly edited the Etherpad, and apparently blanked/deleted chunks of content. The meeting hosts reacted quickly to change Etherpad and Zooms and not re-admit the alias...

📀 watched “The Dark Knight” on Blu-ray, still holds up.I saw it in the Metreon IMAX theater when it came out in 2008. About 28 minutes of it was filmed in 70mm film using IMAX cameras. The movie switched aspect ratios when it switched from IMAX to normal film. The 2-Disc Special Edition Blu-ray also switched aspect ratios roughly at similar times. Nice to see that that was preserved. The movie has incredible pacing. No extra moments. I had forgotten how many quotes originated from The Dark Knight. https://enwp.org/The_Dark_Knight#BatMan #TheDarkKnight #Bluray #Blaugust #Blaugust2026

Morning

Warm tea, wiki edits, and zines sent by a friend that arrived earlier this week welcome me to the morning. Yesterday there was a rain shower more intense than any I have seen for a while; a powerful wind blew through the air. Now, the day is calm: the sky is cloudy and a ligh...

It Was Never About Banana Cake

I know, it's not fair to call a note "banana cake- rant" and not mention "banana cake" once. Might I remind you, "Life is never fair, and perhaps it is a good thing for most of us that it is not." — Oscar Wilde.

Museums

Earlier this week I was thinking about inspiration – what inspires me to write? Nature, friends, what I see in the world as I walk around – all these are the basis of many of my blog posts. Museums, too, inspire me, both to think and to create. When I am in a museum, I can ge...

Museum + guestbooks

I was at one of the local museums last weekend, because it was the last day of their exhibit on "clouds in art", that I'd been wanting to check out since March.

Me at the museum with a camera from which a long piece of paper is hanging

At the museum, I took pictures using a kids camera that instantly prints on thermal paper. I got this because Max had one at IWC Nürnberg and I thought it was cool — he also has a cool post about a thermal printer camera project, you should check that out.

It turned off before I got through the whole exhibit because it was out of batteries, so for the other exhibit they had going on I have pics I took on the phone. In the end I had a really long spool of badly rendered monochrome representations of the art.
