I enjoy it when I’m deferring to a surfer taking off from the lineup and they beg off, giving me the go ahead to ride the wave. Happened today and yesterday.

Add Open Graph support for link previews

Some (social media) sites render link previews if you paste an URL when creating content. If you don't add the proper tags to your website, most parsers try create some on the fly and fail horribly. So, why not configure your website accordingly in the first place? The key t...

Digital, physical

When the Internet Phone Book was released, it came up in several calls I was in. I had a copy of the book on the table next to me so that I could bring it out. Knowing that some people may not have seen the book – or heard of the project – showing the physical copy had signif...

Collaborative web weaving

At last week’s Homebrew Website Club, we had a discussion about making websites collaboratively. The discussion made me think back to the time when several participants all edited the same web page at the same time. The setup was an Etherpad – a web-based collaborative text d...

What is the web equivalent?

Interface design is intertwined with real-world metaphors. Computers save information to files. Files are stored in folders. We can open one or more windows to view different applications. We put files we no longer want into the rubbish bin (trash can). While looking for more...

personal website cards

Last night I went to bed thinking "what if I made business cards for my website". So I spent much of today designing them and cutting them out badly.

My printer is actually a bit messed up right now so the black isn't black so much as weird Cyan. But I like the cheap(?) vibe it gives the cards because it fits with what I kind of imagined for my site redesign, as I described it in a post from a few days ago. I printed them in black (blue-ish) and white and then highlighted each one. I actually used multiple colors to highlight them differently.

I put the paper in the wrong way, the paper has this sort of pattern on one side and now the text's on there and it's a little harder to read.

a scan of 8 of the cards. in the center I've written my phone number but it's blacked out. the different marker colors are blue, green and red. they mark my name

Infinite Canvas, Finite Viewport

This is a post in response to Eric Meyer‘s post Infinite Pixels which takes some trouble to play with calc and Infinity and what those actually work out to in the real world. Infinity is one of those math ideas that also has fanciful implications. And since I learned about it some months ago they’ve...

I went to OB this morning and had fun. I can feel the summer winding down. I’ve not posted to IG lately in favor of other platforms, including my own website. And the world… well, it’s a difficult time for so many right now. There’s so much misery: much of it inflicted by terrible and often venal leadership. Be good to yourself, and be good to others. Participate in the government you’re a citizen of. You are the people. And the people have power.

The past as more than a mirror

A while ago I read a poem that made me reevaluate how I think about the past; or how we in general tend to approach the past as primarily a resource from which we can draw comfort and knowledge. I'll just show you the poem and tell you what I mean, maybe it's a bit strange. ...

Designing without color

Reply to this months IndieWeb carnival hosted by Marisabel on Colors Color—it's more than just the word that I mostly end up spelling in the evil American spelling rather than the proper British spelling that I learned at school. It's a very interesting topic, especially b...

Colors

Preamble I had been drawing for was long as I could remember. In the 8th grade I had earned an award as top artist in the class. But this was 9th grade. High school. I had chosen an elective: “Drawing.” I realize now, decades later, what the point of the class had been. I understand...

Ideas and insecurity

I have this list of ideas, but would you believe I am insecure about not having enough ideas? I said to a friend recently. As soon as I said it, I realised how direct I had been about a persistent, deep anxiety I have had about coming up with ideas. Another part of my mind re...
