Bangkok day 1

After the second flight of the trip we landed at Bangkok airport (BKK). The first thing I noticed is that it was not at brutally hot and humid as when I changed here on a flight to Australia in 2010. This was a huge relief to me. Airport Immigration Once off the plane we hea...

I have been listening to a podcast interview between Ezra Klein and Brian Eno. In it, Eno referenced the concept of the “premature sheen.” I stopped what I was doing, paused the podcast, and started to think about what those words meant. I wanted to learn more about the conc...

Routines

Over the last few weeks I have been working on rebuilding my morning routine. I used to be regimented in my morning routine – everything scheduled down to the minute. I then ebbed the opposite way: my routines became unstructured, my mind every morning exerting itself to rem...

Snow

The snow looks like drops of moonlight I thought to myself as the cool light from the street lamps illuminated the falling snow. It’s beautiful. I have never seen anything like it. Earlier this week I saw light rain fall that looked almost like it was snow – the light reflec...

South East Asia

We have been planning this trip since January, when we all met up in York to discuss when and where we were going to holiday together this time.

Travel

We all started off in different airports around the UK:

  • Susan and I Stansted (STN)
  • Liz & Nick Birmingham (BHX)
  • Sarah Manchester (MAN)
  • Debbie and Mike Newcastle (NCL)
  • Eleanor and Tony Glasgow (GLA)

It turns out that Emirates flies from many different locations now in the UK. All of our flights departed within an hour of each other.

Approximately 7 hours later we all met up in O'Regans Irish Bar at Dubai airport (DBX), there wasn't much Irish-ness about this place but after a few drinks we finally boarded our flight to Bangkok (BKK).

A group of friends sat a round a table in a bar, drinking alcohol

And that was fine and dandy, except for re-using the old 8GHB card, which didn’t let me do anything else. Finding it hard to believe that a 32GB card was only €13, but it was, and so here I am again, starting from scratch.

After two days of futility, trying to upgrade my Pi OS in place, I finally bit the bullet and decided to start with a fresh image of Trixie, the latest. I didn't have that many customisations and in the end I think reconstructing those will be the saner option.
