“My talk for SmashingConf is still a bit too long. What should I cut?“

8-y/o: “Not the part with the large machine! That’s cool.“

(She’s talking about the Large Haydon Collider, of course. 😊)

In other news, we will see Augustin Hadelich live in Berlin next year – playing the Sibelius violin concerto. One of the most amazing pieces of music performed by one of the best violin players ever. In row 4. I can't wait! And my son, who is the actual violinist in the family, is thrilled to bits, of course! 🤩

Announcing rainfall.scot

Earlier this year was drier than normal here in Scotland. If I recall, there was a period of about two weeks where barely any rain fell. That’s not right, I thought. In May, I was curious how dry it was relative to previous years. I discovered that the Scottish Environmental...

Wow. 😮 Dann wird aus #Woltemade mit dem Wechsel zu #Newcastle ja wohl doch noch Konntemade. Und nach Wirtz die nächste Transfer-Blamage für Eberl.

🎬 The Reef

Movie poster for “The Reef”.

Yoah… the acting was quite good, and I liked the partly suspenseful editing, too. But the plot is bonkers and for this to be entertaining, it's not enough action for my tastes.

This week was another Homebrew Website Club here in Düsseldorf. Mark and Jochen came around. It was mostly chatting about IndieWeb and AI topics, but each of us also managed to get some work done on one or more of our projects.

I, for example, published a new photo journal entry. And I registered that site with a WebSub hub and send out WebSub notifications for this new post.

I’m also having fun creating these little animated AVIFs of our little group.

Autumn

With every passing night, I find myself thinking how the sun now sets a little bit earlier each day. Whereas the sun sets late in the peak of summer – at around ten o' clock at night – the autumn sun falls earlier. I notice change in the air as we move from summer to autumn. ...

While Silicon Valley is training their models on everybody’s copyrighted content and seems to get away with it, UMG is obviously using AI to flood YouTubers with automated copyright claims. Including people like Rick Beato who is doing interviews with the musicians who wrote those songs and talk about them. What does UMG think happens after people watch those videos? Exactly. They open Spotify and listen to the artist. It’s free advertising to >5 million subscribers.

Local Hero (IndieWeb Movie Club)

When I watch Local Hero, I am reminded of how much I love home. Indeed, the movie is a story of someone falling in love with Scotland. The beaches may be cold, but they are beautiful. The skies may be dull, but you can sometimes see the Northern Lights. The phone service in t...
