📄 Crash

On Sunday, June 25th 2023, we were involved in a car crash on the Autobahn. While our camper is beyond repair, we were very lucky and escaped with only minor injuries.

The New CSS

Alright, let’s write more about CSS! CSS! CSS! Change I’ve been writing CSS since the early 2000s, shortly after we ditched building web layouts with tables and spacer GIFs in favor of hacking our designs together with floats. CSS has since become my favorite programming lan...

Chaining Declarations via Animation Composition

I just returned from this year's CSS Day in Amsterdam, and it was fantastic! Year after year, PPK and Krijn organize one of the best conferences you can wish for: The program is mind-blowing with the best of speakers coming from all over the world, and at the same time they ...

🎬 In Bruges

Movie poster for “In Bruges”.

Having just been to Bruges, it seemed fitting to watch In Bruges. I canconfirm it’s not a shithole. Fuckin‘ Bruges. That’s my kind of fuckin’film: quirky characters of a shady „occupation“, a bizarre yet coherentplot, with serious and funny elements, and overall very entertaining. All in just over 100 minutes.

🎬 Beau Is Afraid

Movie poster for “Beau Is Afraid”.

Of course, Joaquin Phoenix is fantastic. And it is visually actuallypretty sweet. But oh man, it’s just 3 hours of absurdities. Way over thetop. Not really my thing.

Compared to Ana Lily Amirpour‘s other films, this was lacking. Somehow the setting and vibe didn’t get me as much. Worse dialogue, and too long. And I have to admit that I find realistic cannibal scenes quite repelling. I’d rather happily rewatch her other movies.

📄 View Transitions

Prompted by Jeremy’s post on the topic, I’ve been trying out the brand new view transitions API for multi page apps – i.e. normal websites.

Since my previous CMS forestry.io stopped working, and its successor TinaCMS doesn‘t work with my setup, I replaced it with Decap CMS (previously Netflify CMS). I needed to add some CSS overrides, though, so it actually works on a small phone-sized screen – which to my suprise it didn’t out of the box.

Anyhow, I’m pretty pleased with the replacement and this is the first post using my new CMS.

📄 Status May 2023

Since the beginning of April, I’ve been taking a break from freelancing. That means I currently don’t work for anyone else. And it’s been glorious so far! Instead of doing software development all day, I’ve really taken it easy and have done things I enjoy, wanted to do for a while, or simply had to get done – with plenty of time to do so.

Writing, Fragments, and the Memex Method

This piece by Cory Doctorow about blogging, which I read a few days ago, is exceptional. Why? I already knew that blogging – and having a personal website in general – is a superpower. I had heard before of Vannevar Bush’s groundbreaking essay “As We May Think” that directly...

🎥 Big Muff pickup ride

Big Muff pickup ride

I bought a used Bass Big Muff pedal, and this is the bike ride to the person I purchased it from.

It’s a sunny weekday morning ride from last October with not much traffic or people around. It’s fairly long, but somehow, I like to document my bike rides every once in a while. The route until minute 13:40 gets cycled frequently - the remaining bit, not so often.

🎬 Nomadland

Movie poster for “Nomadland”.

„Dedicated to the ones that had to depart.“ I felt somewhat addressed bythis. And this movie really captured the feeling of being on the road(and returning) so well. This really gave me wanderlust and brought backa lot of nice memories. Great visuals, great words, and – oh man – thatpiano soundtrack! Beau-ti-ful! I want to go back to Nomadland!

Oh yes, thanks for this one, Ms. Amirpour! This was so entertaining! Its atmosphere really drew me in. The soundtrack is ace. And visually is superb, too. Loved all those super-wideangle shots. And the acting! First and foremost by Jun Jong-seo. Just watch her face at the end while the plane starts. So good!

🎬 Before the Devil Knows You're Dead

Movie poster for “Before the Devil Knows You're Dead”.

When you think it can’t get any worse, it does. Ever more fucked up shitabout the characters and their relationships gets uncovered.

Great acting all around. And the non-linear plot is also kind of mything. But ultimately this did not go beyond the “totally finefilm”-boundary for me.

I finally made some prints again. Needing a present is always a good motivator. I probably do not do this so often, because it’s time consuming getting everything ready, and I don’t always have the motivation for it, and/or the bathroom is not unoccupied early enough. Producing a print by hand is so satisfying, though. Both images are in the April photo journal entry.
