This week I was writing a story and noticed something strange: I didn’t give the document a title, but, after saving it, the document had a title that I did not expect. If I don’t have a name for a story yet, or if I am doing free writing, I will often not give a document a ...

🎬 Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma

letterboxd.com/danielpietzsch/film/teenage-sex-and-death-at-camp-miasma/

Movie poster for “Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma”.

Hm. I probably expected something different from this movie. Both thematically and visually. It certainly has its good (and funny) scenes. The main character is very likeable. And the tongue in cheek references to slashers are good, too. But the story was weird and too meta for my tastes. And visually this was all over the place, and I was partly really turned off by the CGI and the kitschy landscapes. So, not quite my cup of blood.

Resilience

I stand under a warm autumn sun and look back and see a dark cloud, seemingly resting still in the sky. I know it is moving — getting slightly closer. But yet the day is still beautiful. There is light to appreciate.

After spots of rain, the cloud blew away and the blue in the sky where there was grey marked a new beginning.

Loading bold and italics fonts on my website

A while ago, I noticed that my headings did not look consistent across Firefox and Safari. I learned that this was because the font file I was using on my website did not contain bold characters. This meant that browsers were trying to “synthesise” a bold font. This synthesi...

New episode: The Truth About Picky Eaters

I cannot imagine the horror of being a parent whose child won’t eat anything. The guilt, the fear, the worry. And yet pickiness is everywhere. It seems almost inevitable. Helen Zoe Veit's new book reveals that pickiness wasn’t even a thing until the 1920s. Where did it all go wrong? And what can you do if your child is picky?

Deep in the Umbrian countryside, even a Rabbit only 1.3 km away (much less as the crow flies) might not be reachable, and so it proved. I got as close as I could, on the edge of an olive orchard, but the Rabbit itself was down in a steep wooded valley.

The coffee

This year I have been drinking more tea than coffee. I have around three or four coffees a week, usually all decaf, and I don’t visit speciality coffee shops as much as I once did (in large part because I am never sure whether there will be decaf available). I think the last...

🎬 Melancholia

letterboxd.com/danielpietzsch/film/melancholia/

Movie poster for “Melancholia”.

When melancholia hits you hart, you’re done.

Absolutely love the depressing atmosphere in this movie. And what a scenario with another planet hitting earth!

Love the classic soundtrack. The space images are fantastic. The opening slo-mo sequences remind me of Crewdson photographs.

Part one might be a bit too long, but part two is absolutely perfect.

👍 Recommended!

Of Day

Herein, vignettes of today. Silver-tipped trees, reddening leaves hanging over fences. Trees swishing like bristles of a brush, painting the day, or waving away the clouds. Morning — listening to music that makes me happy. ⁂ ⁂ ⁂ Two hearts drawn on a wall on the corner. I...
