Map of the internet

Reply to Help me map the internet! by Tiffany

Also posted to Indienews, maybe more people will draw maps before the end of November.

I saw Sara submit something for this! I think it's a cool prompt and since I'm done with my huge project (for now) I can finally draw stuff for fun again without feeling bad and thinking "I should be creating something else". So I also made it kinda silly.

Here's my map: A person in a rocket ship flying through starry space, where all planets orbiting those stars connect to each other with lines

A jumpers-for-goalposts post about the origins of WordPress that contains this gem

“Then the little blogging tool did what software does best: it quietly turned into something much bigger.”

Which what is wrong with so many little software tools. They can’t leave well enough alone. And I get it, but sheesh.

Snowy morning

On the cusp of the snowy doorstep, I felt a child-like excitement. I wanted to run outside and embrace the snow — the first proper snow, as we would say here, in at least a year. This is the kind of snow that will lie on the ground., I thought. The snow flakes were thick, lea...

Machine knitting: front panel / looking forward

This post is part of a series, as I play catch-up on KnitFactoryImpl's knitalong of a set in sleeve crew neck sweater for channel members. At the dawn of the final day of the knitalong, I was determined to finish the machine-knit portions of the build. That means making the ...

Icebreakers

This evening I hosted an online event about writing and writing on the web. “Writing” is a broad topic, so I wanted a way to help get the discussion going. A few weeks ago, I tried an ice breaker question in an event which went well, so I decided I’d try one again this evenin...

Bookmarks

My copy of Stephen King’s On Writing has been sitting on the shelf for a while. Why I stopped reading the book is one of those things lost to time. But about two weeks ago, I went to my bookshelves and picked out the two books that I had started but not finished yet. I could ...

Signal Alerts from Uptime-Kuma

Uptime-Kuma, a self-hosted internet monitor, will now send alerts to me using Signal. This is roughly how I did it, more as an aide-memoire for my future self, but perhaps it can help you. The first thing is to install the Signal REST API and send a test message, as per the...

This post is part of a series, as I play catch-up on KnitFactoryImpl's knitalong of a set in sleeve crew neck sweater for channel members. In the first installment of this series, I made some sleeves, putting me well on time for the knitalong. Since then, however, I spe...

🎬 Inception

Movie poster for “Inception”.

Haven't seen this again since it came out. And I enjoyed this a lot now! That dream-within-a-dream concept is so good, and Nolan can just go crazy with the action. And it's still one of his movies you can more easily follow. Technically it's flawless IMO. And that ending is so perfect!

Sunlit for sharing photos

After some discussion at IWC Berlin and online, I decided to download Sunlit to ease sharing photos. The good news is that it just works, out of the box, to send images to my stream. Once there, I can edit to enable sharing to Mastodon and off they go. I have not yet tried adding my Mastodon account as a second destination, because I want to be at least a little mindful and not post everything everywhere. One tiny criticism: when you add Alt text, the input box obscures the image. That makes it a little harder to describe the contents. Other than that, I'm very happy, and happy to move another step away from IG.

Good HWC yesterday. I finally removed SASS from the build-pipeline for this site - using just plain CSS now - and also updated my view-transition syntax, so that those work again now. But apart from this, it was mostly us talking about various topics from home networking and self-hosting to - as often - AI and LLMs.

The next HWC DUS is on Dec. 18th.
