Updating user interfaces

My experience of the tool in which I write blog posts – Typora – is functionally the same as it was when I started using the tool several years ago. Typora starts as it always does since I set it up: as a blank page, ready for me to start writing. There have been many update...

Today

More leaves and trees are turning from green to orange. On a walk earlier today, I looked around with awe as I noticed more leaves are turning yellow and red and orange. I even saw one tree that is almost entirely red! In spring, the tree blossoms a delightful pink; in autumn...

Machine knitting: forbidden socks

Before I reveal the story foreshadowed in my post about machine knitting some first hats, a digression. One of my main goals with machine knitting is to be comfortable enough with the machine and techniques required to make custom two-color patterns with AYAB. To that end, I...

📄 How to create a blurry status bar for PWAs on iOS

When you install a PWA on iOS (and iPadOS) via “Add to Home Screen”, you can make the status bar – i.e. the area at the top around the notch/dynamic island – transparent yet blurry (so that you can still read its infos like the time or battery status).

How Artemis polls web feeds

RSS readers mostly 1 work by "polling" web feeds to retrieve posts. At a specified interval, the server will try to download every feed to which a user is subscribed, and add any new posts to the database. These posts are then displayed in a user's reader. Building a web rea...

🎬 Black Water

Movie poster for “Black Water”.

Actually not bad at all. Good action, and a terrifying crocodile, surprisingly brutal. Has suspense too. Entertaining little Aussie movie.

Beautiful! The pictures, the soundtrack, the story, Hunter. The (quite long, but never boring) ending, where they tell their stories and motivations, separated by a one-way window is just great. I did not cry, I swear!

Stellar Scrapm'n is hauling on the Playdate

Last weekend, I joined forces with my buddy Hunter to make a game for PlayJam 8, a game jam for the adorable yellow Playdate game console. Introducing: Stellar Scrapm'n! Descend into debt as you ascend to the stars in a clunky little hauling ship. Crank to steer through rock...

Good Bye Host Europe

I am with my current hosting partner since 1999 when they still had the name One-2-One. I usually was happy with them and they even sponsor two of my servers. One on which runs everything beyond tellerrand related and one where anything else, like this page, runs on. Surely ...

Second person birds

I remember the feeling of the light shining around and through the curtains. Then there was music: melodies in chirp. I wanted to close my eyes and go back to sleep for just a while longer, enjoying the warmth of my bed, but I didn’t want to forget the light and the music – there was a moment so wonderful just behind the curtain. Bird song plays the role that so many people do and have done in my life: the bird song is the music that starts my day. I wonder if the birds know how far their songs carry, how we notice the patterns and changes in their tone, how we find both wonder and joy in figuring out from where the song calls, how their song starts and adds life to the day. This is my entry for the September 2025 IndieWeb Carnival, hosted by Sophia at toground.link. The topic is "second person birds".

Rain

I don’t think it’s going to rain that much I thought to myself before going out yesterday. I took my summer jacket: a light blue denim coat that brings me a lot of joy. My jacket keeps me warm. However, my jacket doesn’t have a hood. Later in the day, when I got to my desti...

Walking

When did I stop walking as much? I realised this week after having found the motivation to go out for a few walks. I knew that I didn’t want to spend the whole day inside. I want to see the world. With each passing day, I felt more confidence in going out. My usual walk seeme...

The autumn rains are here. I have been looking forward to a bit of rain. There is something delightfully cosy about sitting inside reading or writing or watching television while the rain falls outside. And, rain means the opportunity for rainbows. This week, I have seen at l...

Machine knitting: taking a stand

In my apartment we are lucky enough to have a big countertop, open on three sides, creating a nice flat project surface for even sprawling projects. However, we also have a lot of projects that compete for this space! Producer Amy is often working on increasingly complex sew...
