Word of the day

Sometimes when someone is talking I will hear a word and think I haven’t heard that one before! If I hear – or read – a word I haven’t heard before, I usually look it up. I wonder what this word means!, I think to myself. If I read a fun word, I used to make it my “word of the day” which I would share with friends. I don’t do this much anymore, although I had a lot of fun doing it – listening and spelunking for words in the veritable caverns of English to find a cool word. With that in mind, I have a word of the day for today! The word of the day is: haar. The Cambridge Dictionary defines haar as: a cold mist coming from the sea to the east of Scotland or northern England: Besides being a useful word to describe a weather condition common to Scotland – fog! – it is also fun to say. Haar. Said like a pirate would say arr, except with a “h” at the start.

Brainstorming a Notion-powered static site generator

I write my daily notes in Notion. I keep one long document called “Today” in which I keep track of TODOs and all my notes and observations from the day. While the page is called “Today”, it is a living document that often ends up getting very long. There have been a few times...

How I navigate my website wiki

I publish both blog posts and wiki-like pages on my website. The difference between these two types of pages is that the former is written at a point in time whereas the later grows over time. One of my main uses for wiki pages are lists: of ideas, of movies to watch, of note...

Next Thursday, May 22nd at 6 pm, there’s going to be a Homebrew Website Club Düsseldorf. Co-organised by Schepp and myself, we plan this to be the first HWC event in a series of regular events.

I quote from the IndieWeb wiki page to explain what an HWC is:

Homebrew Website Club is a growing world-wide network of meetups for everyone who wants to take back their web experience from social media silos, and own their online identities & content, or just want support with blogging!

So, if you’re interested in this sort of thing, and can make it to Düsseldorf, you’d be very welcome to join. (We still have to confirm the location, and will update the event page as soon as possible.)

The joy of

Seeing someone wear an Eras Tour t-shirt (if you know you know). Writing with the glow of the sunset radiating through the window. The detail of the hand-painted illustration on the wall in a coffee shop. Saying something that makes someone laugh. A colleague leaving a sticker on my desk. Dream big., it read. Basking in the sun at lunchtime on a warm spring day. Sharing ideas with friends. Writing stories. Imagining.

The park

After a long day, one of my favourite things to do is to get a sandwich from a supermarket. Today I was tempted by a meal deal: a sandwich, some fruit, and a bottle of water. The sandwich to fill me up, the fruit for something sweet (I love fruit!), and a bottle of water to n...

The blank whiteboard

When I am motivated to make new things, my whiteboard becomes a living space. I jot down notes day and night: things I want to do, ideas I want to explore, phrases that come to mind. The ideas I am ready to turn into reality — wireframes, essay ideas, website thoughts — “grad...

BERLIN DESIGN Connect

BERLIN DESIGN Connect is planned as a community gathering as part of the Berlin Design Week 2025. Right before I went deep into the last bits and pieces for beyond tellerrand Düsseldorf 2025, I have been invited to be part of it.

The event has three different stages plus networking space and I am part of the “Community Panel” together with Ana Regidor, Felicitas Schmittinger and Harshini Karunaratne as well as a Community Space where people can get information about beyond tellerrand.

Next to all this, workshops and talks are planned also. Find the full program on this page

Last Friday I published my second Cybersecurity Friday post with three more key steps for cybersecurity. In summary:1. Different email address for each account, AKA email masking. Use or create a different email alias for each service you sign-up for.2. Different password for each account. This is a well known security technique against credential stuffing attacks.3. Use a password manager to autofill. Always using a password manager to autofill your login username (or email) and password can be a very effective method of reducing the chances of being phished.Full post with details: https://tantek.com/2025/122/b1/more-steps-indieweb-cybersecurity#CyberSecurity Friday #cyber #securityPreviously: https://tantek.com/2025/055/t1/three-steps-indieweb-cybersecurity
