Photos from border:none 2023

Last week Joschi Kuphal and I rand another edition of border:none, after we ran the very first edition in 2023. It was great fun, a really pleasure and absolutely wonderful. When I say “it”, I mean everything! Organising it with Joschi (and the team from tollwerk), listening to the mostly unexpected and very personal talks by all the speakers and chatting to and exchanging with the attendees. Thanks a lot for those days!

Florian Ziegler, who also always is part of beyond tellerrand, took some wonderful photos of the event.

🎬 Halloween

I'm not too much convinced about the premise: that Laurie – 40 years later – is still obsessed with Michael, and how he escapes (of course!) exactly on Halloween. And then it all peaks in this Home-Alone-ish finale.

But the suspense and slasher-action, the visuals, the soundtrack, the cast, is pretty good, I must say. So I still ended up well entertained.

🎬 First Blood

Movie poster for “First Blood”.

Rambo just wanted to have lunch in that little town after he found out his comrade had recently died. And then he got persecuted and things escalated.

This really is a great movie, and I always think it has way more depth than its reputation might suggest. The action is great though.

Photos from SmashingConf Antwerp 2023

In February Vitaly Friedman and I went on a one-day road trip to explore a few venues in Belgium in Ghent and Antwerp. Some of them were recommended to me, others I had found on the web. During the car ride we had lovely conversations about what we want for SmashingConf and ...

🎬 Dead Man

Movie poster for “Dead Man”.

Johnny Depp as a wounded/dead man still walking. Surreal, dreamy, funny, great acting. And the soundtrack is especially noteworthy: it's just Neil Young and his electric guitar, and it all sounds like he's improvising live to the movie. Just great.

Still don’t know what’s going on (and that’s part of the fun). Still very entertaining. Still like this very much!

🎧 Nightmare Logic – Power Trip

Great riffs, powerful vocals, raw sound, and all killers no fillers. Thrash!!!

🎧 Axe To Fall – Converge

For some reason, this is the album from their discography that I had been drawn to first. And I absolutely love it!

Converge were so impressive live a few weeks back, I had to get more into them. And it’s absolutly rewarding once you do. So many interesting ideas and songs on this album. Plus the musicianship is top notch. And that sound!

The whole thing is so damn heavy! And in a different way than I’m used to from - say - Death Metal. A ferocious steamroller.

🎬 Eastern Promises

This was good! A great cast. Credible characters. Some gruesome moments. A story with twist and turns. And a fantastic action fight scene. Only that ending spoils it a little (they kiss!? What?!).

I have now integrated the photo journal feed directly into the main feed.

This saves me from manually creating a link post each time the photo journal has been updated.

And I updated both feeds. If you now have a whole bunch of unread articles in your feed reader, I’m sorry.

🎬 Everything Everywhere All at Once

Movie poster for “Everything Everywhere All at Once”.

Ok, I do not quite get the grand hype around this. It’s good, though: it’s like a modern or different take on Matrix. With a similar philosophical theme. It’s pretty funny in parts. The fight scenes are quite good. Dialogue is good. But it’s a bit long: the whole universe-switching gets a little distracting towards the end. But overall I can certainly recommend this!

🎬 Pig

I liked the overall theme and vibe of this movie. It's nicely filmed and Nic Cage is great. It could've been more focused and could have had more bite. Good!

Maybe if you manage to sympathise with the protagonist, you will feel different about this. But I didn’t, and so I found this pretty boring.

The end was really unexpected, though (which is a plus in my book).

🎬 Arrival

Wow. I wasn’t prepared for this much emotion. Much respect Mr. Villeneuve, what a beautiful film! Visually, sonically, emotionally. And the story really comes together nicely in the end. And Amy Adams plays her role so brilliantly! I could easily watch this again once I'm prepared for another onslaught of sadness.

🎬 The Return of the Living Dead

Movie poster for “The Return of the Living Dead”.

If you see past the partly questionable acting, this is a lot of fun. Quirky, gory, funny with a hint of seriousness and menace. Effects were great! I’m not sure if I like running and talking zombies, but I enjoyed this overall.

🎬 The Square

Movie poster for “The Square”.

This one makes you think. There’s a lot going on, and I felt like it wants to say a lot. A bit too much maybe. I found his a bit long, yet still interesting. I enjoyed Force Majeure and especially Triangle of Sadness more.
